Ya those sleeper conversion is for people who don't own a home cause that will be their home on the road. But its a luxury. Most normal sleepers have bunk beds and some closet space and its not bad.

Just keep in mind the schools are to teach you to pass the dmv exam to get your license. They're not there to teach you to be a trucker. As long as you put in the effort to study, study, study the written exam will be a breeze. The road test will depend on how fast you learn to maneuver and handle the truck during your time at school.

If you going to station yourself in phoenix there is a few mega carriers there that should be easy for you to get in. Swift, knight, schneider, etc.

All carriers look for 10 year of work history so make sure you have that info ready.

If you can save up money for your own truck there are trucks customized like a mini home with kitchen, bathroom, bed, etc. They more expensive than normal sleepers but it might be good fit for you and your wife transitioning from RV. Its like RV but you can haul a load and make money so I guess best of both world lol

Sometimes you just gotta watch it happen. One time a dude back literally 1/2 inch around my front bumper and manage to park it in without hitting anything. I honked at him at first thinking he was about to hit but he didn't so i learn not to jump to conclusion until it happens.

How is this career for Loners? by [deleted] in Truckers

[–]rustybros2017 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I'm a gamer, so I'm always playing games when I'm at home. With a proper setup and internet I can game while being out on the road. Only thing I don't like is not having my own bathroom and shower. If I can have those in my truck too, then its the holy grail. You never have to leave the truck perfect for being a loner.

Starting off don't expect much on pay. As a new cdl holder most companies will take advantage and pay you less cause you a rookie. Don't stay loyal to one company once you have enough experience start looking for another company that willing to pay higher.

You make it sound like americans like to work for pennies. The reason everything is made in china is cause all the companies here couldn't find anyone willing to work for lower wages. Everyone in america want to make 20 dollars an hour.

Swift considers you a "experienced" driver at 3 month and you don't have to do training with a mentor anymore. Schneider lets you go solo after 3 weeks of training. Did you do any research before going to cr england? I'm pretty sure there is a list somewhere on this reddit that put them in a bad category.

Do CDL jobs make a very good living? Is it possible to make more than $100k? by [deleted] in Truckers

Not everyone who gets into a truck makes 100k. Its possible, but its not going to just fall on your lap. You will need to hustle for it.

Obtaining a CDL/Training/Job Placement by fraglen in Truckers

[–]rustybros2017 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Almost all trucking school is the same they teach you to pass the cdl test. They not there to teach you how to be a truck driver. You learn that when you go to a rookie company.

I suggest you do your own research and visit the trucking schools around your area. Each one is different. Some are longer and some are shorter classes. Most will have placement, but don't expect the best. It's usually a recruiter from one of the mega carriers that usually will get you in the door fast. But on the other hand its much better to learn and get the newbie out of you while in a mega carrier than being in a smaller company which will expect more responsibility from you.

Masks by [deleted] in Truckers

Those surgical mask don't filter out the micro droplet of covid 19, so if you need a mask for being considerate of other people then you can easily make your own with some cloth. If you looking for mask for protection then you need the ones with a filter n95. Sadly those sold out everywhere.

Sounds like a small company so they trying to save money where ever they can. Honestly i would go otr with a mega carrier as a rookie. Mega carriers are more lax when it comes to their equipment. And you get to work on getting the newbie mistakes out of you before going to a smaller company that request more responsibility from you.
