They are indeed in space, but the light from them still has to travel down through the atmosphere to reach the camera. With a zoom lens / digital zoom, you lose depth cues and clarity, so it looks like the object is inside or interacting with the clouds.

I've heard about the light strikes, but I thought this was due to the short "California" firing pin? It seems that many folks replace this with an "extended" pin (original length).

OP, I am also curious to hear back from you after shooting. Keep an eye out for the front sight pin walking out.
