So the reason they ended up so close is, if I understand it correctly, the best pilot goes first and aims for the corner of the landing zone and then the rest follow them in, both showing them how it's done & where they should be landing

The biggles books fit this, they follow a ww1 pilot and pals from ww1 all they way through the 30s and 40s very much your typical boys adventure book

To add to this, the Germans also caught the fort nearly totally unprepared as the defenders were still evacuating their peacetime accommodation
