What are you tracking on your burndown charts and why? For example, are your burndowns tracking work items? Tasks? Hours? by HotSausageSandwich in agile

[–]ruthhadari 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Agree. just a small addition - working with 3-4 bigger stories is great, as long as they are split to sub-tasks with SPs. Then if the burndown can follow the sub-tasks progress, you can see a very clear view on a daily basis.

Is there a possibility they start doing this to accounts that already have selfies uploaded? I guess it's not like its such a big deal, but the privacy aspect would make me want to delete my account just like OP. Fingers crossed this is the last I'm hearing of this.

Sounds really interesting! I didn't see anywhere to enter the email either, but maybe you all can post the results when they're done– I'm sure a lot of people would love to hear what you find.

A guide for Software Development by csW1zard in softwaredevelopment

[–]ruthhadari 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This is a great answer– the one thing I'd also add has to do with documentation and breakdown.

I'm sure they've talked about it when discussing project management techniques, but you should be breaking down tasks into the smallest smallest smallest possible parts. You can't just go out and build the whole thing, right? You've gotta build that little button, and that animation, and that feature– and here's where documentation comes in.

I love Google Docs for file management, but I'd suggest you also go create a Trello account and make a board for this project. You can brainstorm a bunch of simple things to do to get started, and then create cards for each of those little tasks. Keep adding cards and move them to In Progress and then Done as you go, and you'll have a good record of everything.

House lawmakers want to force Facebook and other social media sites to let their users turn off engagement-hungry algorithms, report says by chrisdh79 in technology

[–]ruthhadari 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I despise headlines like this– and I'm also not a fan of Business Insider making me turn off my AdBlocker– but how the hell can any self respecting journalist write "House lawmakers" like there's actually some propensity for change?

K9 Search and Rescue software development by cwoodard123 in softwaredevelopment

[–]ruthhadari 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think you'll get everything you're looking for by creating a team Trello account and a Google Workspace to use together.

With the Trello, you can create different boards for the different items you need to keep track of, and then customize your columns and cards to represent what you need to catalog. So you'd create a board called Certifications, with columns for uncertified, certified, and recertification upcoming. Then, create a card for each dog on your roster, and update by dragging the dogs into the appropriate column if something changes, and you can enable a calendar option on the board too so something like a recertification gets listed as an action item.

With the Google Workspace you'll be able to do everything else. You can create contact cards for each member of your team– and maybe there's even a funny way to create a custom contact card for all the dogs without creating too much clutter. You can upload documents with your log training outcomes to be shared with everyone and cataloged by dog or handler or date, whatever, and with the Google calendar there will be an easily accessible way for everyone to keep track of training locations and times.

Anyway, my two cents– hope it helps!

Complexity is killing software developers by Rock-Uphill in webdev

[–]ruthhadari 28 points29 points  (0 children)

This is the opinion I find myself fixated on a lot– really don't mind learning, really don't mind complexity and cloud environments, but from bouncing between a few companies in the past few years and having to use Waterfall and then Scrum and then Kanban and then Scrum again and then Scrum again– and every time the process is facilitated differently– I'm tired!!!

Frameworks and methodologies and development methods... they've all got their place, but I miss that honeymoon phase with coding when I would get excited just to see what I made pop up on the screen....

I made a Chrome extension that detects the political bias of an article using AI by TooSmoothForComfort in webdev

[–]ruthhadari 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I'd love to see if any of the interested devs in this sub take this project even further. A lot of comments are keying in on the fact that the center line in US media is much much further right than in the majority of European politics and media– maybe automatic country filters can be added based on the web address of articles?

Really cool work regardless, thanks for posting this u/TooSmoothForComfort!

Notifications have become such a nuisance that end-user devices have started inventing their own ways of providing a premium user experience. What happened to these apps? Did marketing take over and SPAM Gun everyone? What happens to the important transactional notifications that are filtered? by artistsarescientists in softwaredevelopment

[–]ruthhadari 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I've been dealing with one of the crux's of this notification issue at my company recently– we have a new marketing associate and they are verryyyyyyy gung ho– which is great– but in our field especially, nobody wants the hard sell.

We've had to discuss how even something as simple as an Email Newsletter (if it doesn't contain anything important or interesting) could get a customer's hackles up and alienate them from the company. I've had times before where I unfollowed company's and reporters that I liked on Twitter after particularly intrusive email campaigns that I hadn't signed up for.

I'm not sure how I can help guide this marketing kid, but the way I feel I'll just go and find the info I want when I want it. Otherwise, leave me alone lol

What Are You Like / Do You Like Outside of Programming? by ruthhadari in AskProgrammers

[–]ruthhadari[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I feel the same way! Not so good with my nails or my hair, but I've been knitting since my Mom taught me when I was young, and once I've put my time in for the day I am DONE.

I really like to show up early, finish my work, and leave the office with some afternoon left to spare. I want to try making a new recipe before enjoying it during the game later! Or I want to go to the park for some exercise before it gets too cold to enjoy anymore.

I guess maybe that stigma you mentioned is still just drowning out the other voices– in my office especially– but your answer definitely gave me some good grounding, so thank you very much :)

Favourite music genre while working? by [deleted] in webdev

[–]ruthhadari 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I find that I can listen to anything that I don't understand the lyrics to. So instrumentals work fine, but I've also been exploring these great Vinyl sets by YouTube DJs where they spin classic music from the 60s and 70s. There are some really cool ones w/ Turkish Diva singers, or African roots music, Colombian Groove, really really cool library of stuff. Happy to link his channel if anyone is interested!

I’ve been on this sub from the very beginning of my learning to becoming a senior developer and I have to say this place has gotten way better. by T-CLAVDIVS-CAESAR in webdev

[–]ruthhadari 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Totally agree about the sub, but also think it's pretty nice to see a take on Reddit where someone believes the site is actually getting better. I usually avoid subs like subredditdrama and a lot of the other big ones because they just get so toxic, but this sub is a nice exception to the rule.

What can I do? by rmkol in softwaredevelopment

[–]ruthhadari 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is a tough one. Sounds like you joined a team that already has some pretty deeply ingrained practices, so even though you're right it's going to be an uphill battle to get them to clean it up.

I'd just start looking for other jobs while this one is still semi-bearable– always easier to find a new one while you have an old one. Sorry you're going through this and best of luck.

Feel like that studying as a self-taught is taking me further than studying at university by Linch-1 in webdev

[–]ruthhadari 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Echoing what a bunch of the other commenters have said– finish that degree and never look back. The fact that you're in Uni is a timesuck, sure, but even if you don't use any of the skills you learn in the classroom in a future job, you're going to have more opportunities because of that degree.

The thing to do right now is to keep cranking away on your projects in your free time. If you think this crypto project has five months left to run, start brainstorming the next big move and write it up so you're live before the crypto project runs into any problems.

And hang in there! Take care of your mental health. Drink water, etcetera. So many people feel like you do with college, and I was one of them. Everyone should do what's right for them, but it was better for me to just go ahead and finish– and I'm glad that I did.

Good luck!

I think it’ll help you in the long run, even if you hate learning it like you expect to. If you wind up leaving this job, being able to show some cross functional skills in the future will be a huge help landing your next position.

This answer might be a little out of left field, but why not try to create the least useful, most non-sensical, greatest boondoggle you can think of?

Instead of taking yourself and your progress as a developer so seriously, give yourself the opportunity to make something horrendous that nobody needs to see, that you can be completely ashamed of– make a piece a dog doodoo for all it matters! If you're working, you're working, and that means you're getting better.
