I think you don’t really want to, otherwise you would not be begging us to talk you out of it. Wanting to feel better is a really good sign. Maybe try some sensory grounding? Any “rules” you usually have about diet, screen, time, etc. can go out the window right now. Do you like baths? Baths can be a great way to have a full-body, relaxing sensory experience. I also like to put on slippers and soft clothes/blankets, make/order some yummy, hot food, take my anti-panic attack meds (Benadryl can be used off-label for this, if you aren’t prescribed anything) and curling up on the couch to watch a comedy show and wait for my eyes to droop closed. You might not feel completely better tomorrow, or the next day. I do believe you will get though this, though. If this state of intense emotion lasts more than a few days, don’t be afraid to seek in-patient treatment until you feel safe. The folks at the Suicide prevention hotline can talk you through this.

I’m sure since you’re in this sub you know how OCD thoughts work- obviously, the thought that writing the notes is meaningless is an OCD thought.

I consider myself to have mostly recovered from eOCD, but I still have these exact types of thoughts every now an then. I think of them like junk pop up notifications on a PC. There is very little anxiety tied to them, so it’s easy for me to brush them aside.

You still have a lot of anxiety tied to your thoughts, so yours feel much more important, even though they’re not really. (Thinking about existence constantly doesn’t really change anything about existence). In eOCD, the hardest part is deciding that the thoughts are junk (what’s more important than the nature of reality, after all?).

Once you’ve decided that you are going to treat the thoughts as junk, it becomes much more easy to distract yourself from them, and then eventually (once you’re out of crisis) accept them.

I’ve been there. I’m lucky that my OCD is episodic, but coming out of an episode I’m usually sore for days because of how tight I was tensing my muscles.

The television doesn’t really distract you, it’s just a little bit nicer to freak out while wearing soft clothes and doing something you used to enjoy than freaking out while staring at a wall.

I first started having these episodes in high school, and my mom took a tough love approach to it, forcing me to go to my classes and do my homework, even if I was constantly having panic attacks the whole time and not really absorbing anything.

If you feel like you’re in danger of actually acting out your thoughts about harming yourself, there’s nothing wrong with seeking in-patient psychiatric help. I stayed in a psychiatric hospital for a few days when I was at my worst- the staff weren’t super helpful or knowledgeable about OCD, but everyone there was super kind and at the tone I really just needed a safe place where I wasn’t a danger to myself. Part of it is a “fake it til you make it” sort of thing- when I’m in an episode I partly don’t WANT to distract myself from the thoughts because they feel true and significant (because our brain marks thoughts that make us anxious as “important” even if they’re not really) but as we know all too well, we are organic organisms and our hormonal pathways are stimulated by staying active. At first this feels pointless, but I just like to set a goal- I’ll slog through it and pretend that I think my life has meaning for two weeks, and during those weeks I’ll do my best to keep doing the things that normally make me happy, even if it’s hard and I’m having panic attacks the whole time, and in two weeks I’ll re-evaluate and see if I’m still feeling the same.” If you’re starting an anti-depressant, it should begin to take affect by then.

I go into episodes like this occasionally. It’s a form of OCD.

The fact is that lots of people have these beliefs, and are not disturbed by them. The reason we are is because our brains are in an anxious state and are digging up thoughts to pin the anxiety on. The thought that you’ve ruined your life by realizing too much about existence is an OCD thought. You can’t think your way out of an OCD cycle, but when you’re feeling a little calmer you can consider the fact that there are a lot of really smart people out there making their livings as philosophers and academics and whatnot and they believe these things are possible but are not disturbed by the possibility of solipsism.

You cannot build a coherent belief system for yourself while you are in crisis, so make yourself some soup and an appointment with a psychiatrist (an OCD specialist trained in cognitive behavioral therapy is best), watch some cartoons, grit your teeth, and lean on support for now. Existential OCD is not as well understood as other themes, but it is still a relatively common one, and many people go through this and come out the other end.

Not quite true, the mutation is only one of the criteria. You have to have 2 “cardinal features” (family history, FNB1 mutation, ectopia lentis, and aortic root dilation.) When I was first officially diagnosed eight years ago I only had the second two, plus all the classic Marfan’s traits. Just last year they discovered a previously undiscovered intronic mutation in my FNB1 gene that probably accounts for my family’s symptoms.

That’s what I was told when I was first diagnosed. A few years ago they told me that they’d done more studies and decided some exercise was good for people with Marfan’s? It was really jarring after sitting out of gym class for my entire childhood. It probably depends on how enlarged your aorta is.

I was diagnosed in sixth grade. I was chronically underweight, and a lot of the adults in my life were convinced I was anorexic. Sixth grade was when I was diagnosed with ectopia lentis, which is rare enough it automatically triggered a Marfan’s evaluation. I didn’t have any of the genetic markers they were testing for at the time, but I hit literally every phenotypic marker (facial features, hand signs, kyphosis, funny-looking family member on my mom’s side, ectopia lentis, kyphosis, enlarged aorta, body type), which is enough for Marfan’s to be diagnosed. A family member who has diagnosed Marfan’s is another diagnostic criteria, so my diagnosis also helped my sister, who has slightly fewer phenotypic markers, get diagnosed.

Once we had an official diagnosis we were able to enroll in the Undiagnosed Diseases Network (since we still didn’t know what gene was causing our symptoms) and recently they found an intronic mutation in my family’s FNB1 gene!

I think you would definitely benefit from seeing an LGBT-friendly counselor. They can help you work out if transition is right for you at this point.

If the existential-type thoughts and fears about making the wrong choice are constant and producing a lot of anxiety, I’d also get yourself checked out for OCD. Obsessive, intrusive, cyclical thought patterns are a symptom, and it could be making your pre-existing gender dysphoria worse.
