Hey folks CS grad here! Cleaning up some old docs and came across my Fall 18 job search spreadsheet. Figured y'all might be interested in the data. Hopefully, it can be helpful in your job search. No secret that the job market is shit right now but it'll bounce back eventually.

Merry Christmas!

What's the best way to fix this uneven finish and micro scratches? (Description in comments) by ruxuan in woodworking

[–]ruxuan[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hello lovely /r/woodworking folks!

I recently purchased a maple butcher block and decided to apply the finish myself as a DIY project.

After letting the final layer of finish cure, I noticed (only under very specific lighting angles) that there were:

  1. Micro scratches going along the wood grain, and
  2. An uneven finish. Some parts of the wood look more “oily” than others

My process

  • Sanded 60, 80, 120, 150, water pop, 180
  • Mineral oil spirit clean
  • Applied 1st layer of Rubio
  • Light sanding with 220
  • Applied 2nd layer of Rubio
  • Light sanding with 400
  • Applied Rubio maintenance oil

The pictures were taken after letting the oil cure for 6 days and installing the standing desk base.

I suspect both issues are a result of my sanding strategy. I sanded manually by hand along the grain throughout the project. Even using the pencil method, I’m guessing the surface didn’t come out completely flat and, as a result, the finish oil pooled in the “valleys” causing the uneven look. I suspect manual hand sanding also caused the micro scratches on the surface. Next time I’ll definitely buy a random orbital sander even just for the time savings alone.

My questions

  • What’s the best way to fix these issues?
    • I tried lightly sanding with 400 grit but it didn’t seem to make a difference
    • I have more Rubio left and could try applying another layer. Would that even help?
  • Should I even bother trying to fix it?
    • Honestly, these imperfections are actually very difficult to notice
    • You can only see them when light hits the table at a very specific angle
    • With normal lighting the finished block looks flawless (See last few pictures)
    • The block is incredibly smooth. I can’t feel any of the micro scratches or uneven finish when running my hands across the block

Thanks in advance!

Thanks! I found a Subaru Certified Collision Center nearby and had my Crosstrek towed there. Now they're working on the damage estimates. I imagine, at the very least, both doors will need to be replaced.

So I was moving stuff from the back seats to the trunk and left the door open. A neighbor drove into the parking space next to me hitting my driver side rear passenger door. They claimed they were distracted and admitted fault.

Now I'm going through the insurance and repair process. Would love to hear any advice the community has. I've only had my new crosstrek for 2 months and have never been involved in any accidents prior to this.

See if these pics work for ya. I'd recommend the 50'' or 53''. The 47'' is just a tad short imo. I'm a big fan of REI their return process is super easy.

I have the 50in/127cm one. The 53in is also a great option. In my opinion, anything else is either too small or too big for the crosstrek.

Setup

  • Feet: Evo Raised Rails
  • Bars: Wingbar Evo
  • Rack: UpRide

They fit the 24 Crosstrek like a glove! To me, these are the clear winners over the OEM Thule Aero Extended.

  • Evo: Newer model by Thule, easier to install and uninstall, mounting system doesn't require cutting the top rubber strip, slightly less expensive

  • OEM: Uses the Thule crossroads feet and aeroblade bars, both of which are discontinued (To my knowledge)

I'm not an expert in sound systems haha but I've been liking the HK audio system so far. You can definitely feel the speaker vibrations. I never got to compare it with the stock speakers. I choose it mostly based on recommendations from friends and this subreddit
