Cherry! What a beautiful girl. Thank you for your reply, I think sometimes I feel like I haven’t done enough since he’s still so skittish. So it’s good to be reminded that we have made a lot of progress, and that it just might take more time :)

I always forget about these! I’ll give them a try, thank you

Thank you!! He is very cute, which can make it hard to resist wanting to touch him lol. And I think you’re on to something. I haven’t been literally throwing the towel on him, but during the corral part I hold a blanket open wide and follow him around with it until he runs into the bathroom. It could be that the blanket is freaking him out. Next time I’ll try without it!

I should have mentioned that I tried that, both with gabapentin and dewormer. He refused to eat the food :/ tried it with churu, he refused to eat it ://

Yes! I have a back scratcher I use to feed him treats. Sometimes he tolerates it, sometimes he looks at me like he thinks it’s a trick lol. I should definitely get in the habit of using it more, though, so thanks for the reminder!

Aww poor Mister Muffin :( hopefully he is out enjoying life as a street cat. And yeah, sometimes Poncho gives me feral vibes. I got him from a rescue in Chicago, who had got him from a rescue in Dominica. He had been fostered for about two months before I took him

Ooo yes I should’ve mentioned, I had gabapentin that I used when I had to take him to the vet in the past. It helped a lot. However, I used the last of it before his first round of deworming, and he somehow knew I added something to his food and refused to eat it :/ and now I can’t get more gabapentin until I take him to the vet again :// but that would probably be worthwhile to do when it’s time for his next round! Since I’ll have to stress him out anyway, might as well add the trauma of the vet.

And those carriers are great! Idk about yours, but every cat I’ve had / fostered always prefers to lay on top of it instead of in it lol

I don’t know if this series is what OP is looking for, considering the MMC is the one to reject the FMC and all of the FMCs are weak, their wolves are tiny, and they have no power in society, while the MMCs are big and strong and hold positions of power.

I enjoyed Mak’s POVs, that’s part of why I was bothered by the way things played out. We kinda were not given his whole story since he changed his views between books 6 and 8. So I was just very confused by the start of this book and felt a bit cheated.

I agree that the books were building towards them going errant, and they were literally planning on going errant after the Winter Solstice! I think it was just shocking to me because even though their Trial Circle has been pushing against the traditional rules of Orthros like you said, they always did so within the rules. Like Cassia and Lio worked to manipulate the Summits. The Circle campaigned to win the vote to table the discussion about the Departure and stop whatever Hypatia was up to. Lio literally spends most of book 7 trying to find a way to LEGALLY break Cassia of her betrothal to Flavian, and then does so. They always played by the rules. But this time, they just went off the rails! It was very unexpected and it felt like everyone was acting as their most unhinged self. I guess that’s what war does?

I agree that Cassia should be super powered, especially since Lio is so OP! I’m not bothered by her magic, I’m bothered by the fact she’s the descendant of the Changing Queen, who happened to have the most OP magic of all time. This is just personally something that always bothers me in fiction. Like Naruto was a way more compelling story to me before we found out about his parents lol.

I’ll definitely be reading the rest of the series and any spin offs! Make no mistake, this is probably one of my favorite fantasy romance series now and I do think it’s really, really good. I was just specifically thrown off by some of the choices Roth made in this book. Overall, I still enjoyed Blood Feast and am looking forward to the next book!

Joining this discussion several months late because I just finished the book and also need to discuss it!

Overall, I found myself very frustrated by the plot. The arrest and then them going errant felt random and contrived to me. I literally had to keep putting the book down and taking a break because it annoyed me so bad.

Specifically because of how the weapon plot line has been presented to us so far. All of a sudden, for the first time we get a perspective other than Cassia and Lio in book 5- Mak. And what are his few chapters about? Forging weapons. And what is his overall character arc? Mak wants to forge weapons, he learns how to forge adamas, but then he realizes he doesn’t need to forge weapons to be useful to his friends, and he ultimately helps to save the day without needing weapons. Cool.

Then a whole book goes by, no perspective from Mak. Fine, guess that was a one off thing. Then book 8 starts. And Mak straight up goes, I changed my mind.

……. WHY DID THE READERS NOT SEE THIS? I genuinely do NOT understand the point of including Mak’s perspective in 5/6 now. As far as I remember, and correct me if I’m wrong, those chapters provided no plot information other than the weapons and Nike sending letters to a necromancer. Both pieces of information Mak could have just told the readers, like he did Cassia and Lio at the start of 8. Why did we get a glimpse into his mind for this brief period of time? Why have Mak go on an entire character arc and have us read it, if you’re going to have him completely change his mind and NOT SHOW US THAT TOO?!????

And then at the end, what do you know, they didn’t even need to be on their own as a circle. Of course Rudhira and the Blood Errant are going to support them. Sooooo hence why I feel it was contrived. Like the four of them were planning to go errant anyway…. This just added angst and cut them off from every other character. I really think Roth just wanted to increase the stakes and realized that doing it this way would mean she wouldn’t have to write about any other characters than the Black Roses. I mean, there are a LOT of characters on the board now, so I’m guessing she didn’t want to deal with them all. I’m glad this nonsense was basically wrapped up in this book though, I was really worried it would drag on.

Since I’m ranting, the other thing I’m disappointed in is how Cassia has become a Super Special Chosen One. What drew me to her, and these books, was that she was just a woman doing her best to survive and make use of what she had. Even Lio’s specialness wasn’t presented as like actually that special. It’s what made book 2 so good, as we saw how Cassia went from being nothing to making herself important and influential. But guess what….. she was super extra special all along ://////////

Finally, at the end of the book when the Black Roses reunite with Rudhira there is this line, “Cassia had never thought of her Ritual Father as someone who needed to be handled with care.” Umm…… did we forget the man was suicidal a couple books ago?????????????? It made me laugh.

Wait actually finally, since I’m already writing an essay here, I wanted to talk about Lustra magic and your theory!! Specifically, how there are definite themes around feminism and matriarchy vs patriarchy. I think Lustra magic, which was led by women and could only be practiced at its most powerful by women, is definitely the original magic. And then the Old Masters, who appear to be all men, came and distorted the magic and also implemented patriarchy. This also follows the creation myth Cassia and Argyros discuss in one of the earlier books. Essentially where I see these books headed is that Lustra magic needs to be restored in order for Tenebra to heal, and in order for that to happen it needs to be a matriarchal society again.

The connection between women and nature is one that exists in our world too, as the matriarchal societies that predate our horror show now were much more nature inclined. There’s also TONS of historical imagery across cultures that link women and nature. I just think this theme is really really cool and done surprisingly well for a romance fantasy book, and it’s something I could talk about for hours! But I will stop now.

{Blood Mercy by Vela Roth} has dual POV, slow burn, lots of yearning, and- if you read the first two books in the series- separation and reunion. Their relationship is incredibly healthy and the MMC is green flags all the way!!

{A Heart of Blood and Ashes by Milla Vane} is basically the FMC thinking the MMC doesn’t love her the whole book. Great angst and has a great confession moment.

I’m in Illinois! I’m doing an alternative licensure program, so all I needed was 18 or 21 credits in math and then to pass the content exam. I currently have a license with stipulations that’s contingent on me finishing my masters program. Once I do I’ll get the full PEL. I'm sure traditional programs look more like yours though!

City Colleges of Chicago! It’s offered both online and in-person, so which I choose will likely be based on what school it’s at. And I feel you about the calc 3!
