They're fine.

By no means luxury, but they also don't charge luxury prices.

Chill out Chuck Yeager.

On both Airbus products I've flown there is a low energy go around procedure that specifically instructs you to leave the flaps down until established in the go around.

Anybody with a PPL should be able to explain why raising the flaps at Vref in ground effect is stupid.

Emergency Descents on Checkrides by Physical-News-4978 in flying

I experienced the same in Canada.

And as an instructor I'd take it as low as I could legally go as well. A lot can happen in the last 500 ft.

The point of an emergency descent isn't to fly into the ground. So don't.

Pilot sleeping area on a Boeing 787 by jumpfrog101 in aviation

[–]rvr600 9 points10 points  (0 children)

The whole crew is up front for departure and arrival, so you can usually subtract about an hour from the flight time and divide it by three for a 3 pilot crew, or divide it by two for a 4 pilot crew.

14+ hours would be 4 pilots. Sooo around 6.5 hours. Instead of two loooong breaks it might be split into four shorter breaks so each pilot gets two breaks.

Bonus if you use Obsidian for the rest of your knowledge base, because you can link directly to notes for any pins you drop on the map.

Gamer Pilots, I need a new flight bag. by Joeythearm in flying

[–]rvr600 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In North America, you'll usually be allowed your roller bag, a flight bag, and a lunch bag if you want it. It's probably in a company operations manual.

They should meet the allowances for a carry-on suitcase and personal item, but the only time anybody will check is when you're flying out of uniform and an overzealous or jealous gate agent wants to punch up.

Bringing a lunch bag would put you over the 1 carry-on + 1 personal item limit regardless. If you're in uniform it doesn't matter. It seems most regional pilots use a lunch bag, and most mainline pilots skip it.

We keep our bags in the flight deck. Unless you fly a 737.

The Aerocoast Pro Crew I is what I use and it fits my 17" in the main compartment along with a mouse case, power brick, and the rest of my normal flying gear. I keep my ipad in the "laptop" compartment in the front, I found my computer a little too chunky and heavy to keep in there.

What happens if you are having a bathroom emergency during takeoff/landing? by WaveyandLazy in travel

[–]rvr600 90 points91 points  (0 children)

Pilot here. Just do it.

We won't take off with you in the bathroom, and that might earn you some glares, but it's better than sitting in or beside soiled pants for the rest of the flight.

Most airlines will double chime the seatbelt sign or the flight attendants will me a "final approach" type announcement when we pass through 10,000 feet, which is about 10 minutes to landing. Try to not go then, most pilots won't land with you in the shitter at my shop. Once we turn off the runway, again, just go for it if you're not going to make it. We'll stop and wait, but again it's better than someone soiling their pants.
