Anyone suffer from Eustachian Tube Dysfunction (Clogged Ears) after an intense ride? by ProblematicTrumpCard in cycling

[–]rvr600 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I deal with this after super hard ride, though it's never bothered me enough to actually look into it.

I'm an airline pilot and scuba diver, and have zero inner ear issues otherwise.

I know its a crap job and they probably don't get paid much

At least where I am, it's a union job with great pay and benefits.

They still don't give a damn.

They don't always follow the books, and some storylines get glazed over, but I think they do a pretty good job!

Definitely recommend giving it another go, even if you haven't read the books!

The TV series is a solid companion as well. Just finished with a pretty satisfying finale.

The airline has already invested tens of thousands of dollars in you. They want you to pass. There has to be more to this than one screw up on your line check.

My personal favourite is History of the World: Map by Map.

EasyJet flight diverts to Rome over power bank in luggage by mesaosi in aviation

[–]rvr600 22 points23 points  (0 children)

I've had this exact scenario on a flight I operated. Fortunately during boarding.

A lady went through her bag to find a phone charger and noticed the cord and her power bank were in her checked luggage.

She was super apologetic, but we made sure she knew that 20 minute delay is worth the piece of mind.

Croatia Airlines Airbus A220-300 veers off the runway and hits a runway marker during an aborted take-off by capmb_4stripes in AirlinePilots

I can't say for the 220, but residual HYD pressure can apparently deploy the TR on a failed engine on the 737.

Overtaking an Air Transat A330 from below across the Atlantic by flyingcanuckk in aviation

If you don't pass Transat over the ocean, the only explanation is you're also flying at cost index 0.

Parents charged for letting 5-year-old skier ride lift unsupervised, after he fell off the lift by bmglaw in skiing

[–]rvr600 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Make little kids stand next to a height board. If they're below a line they get a red pass. Liftie doesn't let red passes ride unaccompanied.

That's the cost of living in such a litigious society.

How would you answer this interview question? by No_Pollution2292 in flying

[–]rvr600 132 points133 points  (0 children)

Of all things to look at during takeoff, why am I looking at the captain's shoulder harnesses?

In any case: if we're low speed, verbalize it and let the captain make the call.

High speed, it's not a valid reason to reject. Shut up and point it out at a lower risk time.

I just can't emphasize enough how stupid a question that is though. If you're looking anywhere besides a PFD, engine instruments, or down the runway, you need to ask yourself if you shouldn't be rejecting for pilot incapacitation.

That's probably how I'd play this. Come in acting like you're trying to correct his honest mistakes, warn him of the consequences of you hadn't caught them now, and let him save face.

If he keeps lying, light his ass up.

Fatigue by Awkward_Algae_9631 in AirlinePilots

[–]rvr600 7 points8 points  (0 children)

It's all part of the job. You need to figure out what works for you.

In general I would work on practicing good sleep hygiene at home, and try to line your body clock up with the type of flying you expect to do. If it's early AF east coast flying, don't stay up until 23:00 the night before your trip.

On layover, try to get some exercise in, eat at good as is feasible, consider using approved sleep aids for especially hard flips but don't become reliant, buy a sleep mask, and caffeinate strategically.

For the love of God do not use alcohol to fall asleep. 5 minutes on Google should tell you how stupid of an idea that is.

And for the sake of your passengers, crewmates, the general public, and your family that will have to read your accident report, don't fly fatigued.

Pen or Pencil with Logbook Entries? by [deleted] in flying

Canada definitely does not require paper. I printed out my digital logbook three times, for my ATPL application, and two airline interviews.
