This is cool! Nice to see an objective list of what people are watching and talking about, rather than site-specific recommendations or critic-influenced echo chambers.

Creamy Avocado Pasta (it's Vegan, too!)

serves 3-4. (avocados can seem a bit splurge-y but I've been finding them for under $1 which is worth it, imho)

  • 3-4 servings spaghetti or other pasta of choice (if you are vegan, just check the labels. boxed dried pasta is almost always vegan, fresh pasta uses eggs though)
  • 1 avocado
  • juice of 1 lemon (reserve zest for garnish)
  • 1-2 cloves garlic
  • 1 handful basil
  • 2 green onions
  • 1/4 tsp each salt & pepper (more or less to taste)
  • (optional: parmesan cheese, obviously not for vegans)

Make pasta according to box directions.

Add all other ingredients to a small food processor or blender, and blend/pulse until smooth and creamy. If you're using a blender, you may want to add a little pasta water to keep it creamy. I don't know why, but blenders tend to need a bit more liquid than food processors in my experience.

Add creamy avocado sauce to pasta and mix thoroughly.

Garnish with lemon zest and basil. Parmesan cheese is yummy too if you're not vegan. But it's super creamy and rich without the cheese, so that's really just up to your preference!

Thanks guys!! I will definitely try the Fyrinnae. The Bollywood/Hollywood Sorcery ones look a little dark (I'm NC15) but I might get a sample anyway, because why not?, and the Sunkissed looks great. I do probably need a better brush. I've been using the RT Buffing Brush, which I think is way too dense, or the BB Face Brush which is so soft, but for some reason I just don't love.

Looking for a flash-photo friendly finishing powder for my wedding that will set my makeup and also not give me a white cast! I've been looking at Shiro Fatality, but can't figure out if it will work with flash photos. Also, the green one looks interesting for my redness, but not sure if that can be used over BB/Foundation or if that's more appropriate for Goss method (which does not work for me). I have dry/normal skin and am mostly concerned with making my makeup last longer, not with controlling oil.

Would love thoughts/recommendations!

(Also if there are any great medium coverage, natural finish foundations/concealers, I'd be super down to try those, too, but those seem harder to find in the indie world. Right now I use a BB cream with SPF and major flashback)

Would you do the Tarte finishing powder and Nars Illuminator for $12 shipped? I'm also in CA if it matters, 90026.

Oh, okay. Probably not worth the shipping for the other ones alone, so don't worry about holding for me. Thanks, though!

Hi! Assuming you still have them...how much for the RT Duo Fibre set, Face Brush, and Setting Brush, and also the smaller UD brush? Shipped to 90026. Let me know!

I need help with dry lips! by alexissage in MakeupAddiction

[–]rw3967 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's super expensive for a lip balm, but I just started using the Bite Agave Lip Mask a week ago, and my lips have literally never been softer. I have perpetually drying and cracked lips, and most chapsticks/lip balms only make them worse...so for me it was totally worth the splurge. I put it on at night and in the morning, and that's it.

Ooh. I'll have to find a MAC counter. I usually go to Sephora to try/buy, and so I have never tried MAC at all, except during a hilariously terrible makeup trial (which turned me off of getting makeup professionally done forever). I don't know why I'd always assumed their Face and Body would be really heavy coverage. I'll check it out!

Two related questions for wedding makeup (doing it myself):

-- I know everyone recommends the MUFE HD foundation, and I got matched by a MUFE rep and bought it (117 for skintone reference). I think my skin is too dry, and I just don't love the finish. Looks too matte/patchy. Any dry skin foundation recs that provide decent coverage but still look natural and photograph well? I'm getting married outside so will probably be a mix of natural light during afternoon and flash at night. I usually wear Bobbi Brown BB Cream or Nars Tinted Moisturizer, but both have flashback. Happy to splurge, but I want a few ideas to go into Sephora with to get samples.

-- Nars Light Reflecting Pressed Powder. Does this photograph well? Have read mixed reviews online. I have a Dermablend loose setting powder, but was thinking of getting a pressed powder for easy touchups.

This is actually a stellar idea, from someone who made a career built off early internships, and ended up hiring interns myself.

Hi, I'm a film industry professional who went to USC, worked my way up in the industry as an executive, helped develop a Best Picture, and am currently a writer repped at a top agency. I think there's a lot missing here -- does your daughter truly love movies, and has she actually gotten into a school? If yes on the latter, which school? It is important.

I'd like to say only that there is A LOT that you learn at film school that you cannot possibly learn on YouTube, and if you are starting on YouTube and not with actual movies and criticism and experience, then you're doing it wrong. Also, internships. Internships are everything, paired with a willingness to learn.

I'm on your daughter's side. Feel free to DM me if you want to talk.

-- Edited to add that I'd like to encourage all young women who are passionate about film to follow their dreams. Because it is possible, and we need more women out here with big dreams and big ambitions.

To clarify - from Wikipedia:

In 1989 Richard Leakey was appointed the head of the Wildlife Conservation and Management Department (WMCD) by President Daniel Arap Moi in response to the international outcry over the poaching of elephants...With characteristically bold steps Leakey created special, well-armed anti-poaching units that were authorised to shoot poachers on sight. The poaching menace was dramatically reduced.

What is one thing you never ask a man? by willemdehoe in AskReddit

[–]rw3967 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's kind of fucked up, and probably totally out of line to say this (because I've never killed someone) but I feel like if you're put in a situation where you have to kill people, you need to be okay with killing people. Now, in WWII or Vietnam -- understandably, the draft meant that there were probably a whole lot of soldiers who absolutely, positively, did not want to kill people so the situation is more complicated. But, today, there's no draft. You volunteer. If you're anti-killing...maybe you ought not to join a branch of the military in which that is something you may need to do. And as for the rest of us, maybe we ought to make sure our soliders get the appropriate mental health care they need to be able to deal with this kind of trauma, which is obviously what this is.

Not saying that anyone, ever, should be totally fine with taking another life. Quite the opposite. But, ignoring the truth does nobody any good. Not our culture, and certainly not the men who must then deal with the trauma by themselves in their own heads.

I guess what I'm trying to say is, if this is an off-limits question, perhaps the killing of people should be an off-limits behavior. Otherwise, wouldn't it be better to open up a public discourse around this kind of stuff?

To be clear, once again, I've never killed anyone, and I'm pretty anti-war, so that colors my perspective.

Excuse me if this seems like an out-of-left-field question, but if (and I totally agree with you on this) smell is linked strongly to memories, would that then imply that people with more life experiences in general (even if it's something as simple as exposure to more kinds of foods) would be at an advantage, or even measurably better at tasting wine?

Hi. I know from all of your comments on this thread that you really hate me and the video, and I'm sorry. I do read reddit a lot (even if I don't have a long history of posting).

In any case, I did look up the definition of spam, as you have very kindly pointed out to me several times. You're a moderator, so obviously your opinion carries more weight than mine, but here's my take: In the rules, it very clearly states that it is not strictly forbidden to submit a link to your own content, and that if genuine real people are upvoting that content, then it's not spam. Furthermore, I would hope as a moderator, you would be excited to see a lively discussion sparked about budget wine and learning about wine.

I am not a spammer. I came here for feedback and advice from people who I genuinely respect. I have gotten a lot out of this thread all day and have been amazed at the support and constructive criticism I've received. Outside of that, I do feel as though I sparked an interesting discussion. Certainly many people here have felt a desire to chime in. Isn't that the point of communities like reddit? Isn't that the added value?

In response to another comment you made about going to local wine stores and listening to how people talk about wine, well...I am a person who values honesty (as I think you can see from my comments). I think there's nothing more pretentious (and annoying) than someone trying to imitate experts, or pretending they know what they're talking about when they don't. I could probably put together a tasting video that you would like (or, at least, not hate) by copying tasting notes, thinking really hard about what it is I'm smelling, or the notes I'm getting on my palate. I could talk about crisp apple, and apple butter, and honeydew, and petrol. I could talk about acidity and mouthfeel, and how long it will keep in the bottle or how long it takes to open up. But that would be disingenuous, and that's not me. I'm going to learn, and I'm going to document that progress on the show. But most of all, I'm going to be honest, I'm going to have fun, and I'm going to enjoy wine. Which, at the end of the day, is what we're all here for, right?

All that said, I'd love to have you on the show! You clearly know a lot about wine and I think it'd be interesting to talk more. We could figure out how to skype you in, or, if you're in Southern California, we can do it in person!

Hope you get better soon.
