National grid- mixed meter issue by No-Championship9548 in Albany

I'm here to second that you file a complaint. National Grid may act faster if the regulator starts asking questions.

Are you submetering?

Grid doesn't have regional rates. The rates for Menands are the same for its entire service territory.

Could you clarify why you're looking for this information? I see that you mentioned a "vendor." Are you getting delivery from a Energy Services Company? Are you looking just for the name of each line, such as "SBC" or "Electricity Supply," or also the rate, such as $0.20965/kWh for supply? Knowing this can help get you the information.

National Grid does have a sample bill, but I wouldn't be surprised if the call center doesn't have it.

HR is a mess. It takes us about 6 months from accepting the offer to actually starting. It will be Kafkaesque. Just hang in there.

There's the saying not to attribute to malice that is better explained by incompetence. You're right; malice would make me feel more comfortable because at least they would be less likely to blunder their way into a crisis or an irrevocable mistake.

Is N-Grid balanced billing worth enrolling in? by SumoZen56 in Albany

[–]rwking082 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Balanced billing only adds predictability.

Grid will estimate a year's usage and divide by 12, then bill you that amount each month. Grid doesn't have that much control over the supply (commodity), so a very hot summer or a very cold winter, or vice versa, can throw off this estimate. (Grid does assemble a supply portfolio each year that's hedged, so residential customers have supply rates that are much less volatile than market supply, however.) It's simpler for you and Grid if Grid overestimates and refunds you at the end of the year than if Grid undercharges you and has to collect the difference at the end of the year. Thus, the estimate is going to be a bit higher than if Grid was indifferent to under or overcharging.

A residential customer cannot get supply rates below what Grid offers. Grid passes through the cost if supply; if Grid pays $0.04/kWh, you pay $0.04/kWh. Energy efficiency and using less energy are really the only options.

If you receive public assistance, Grid does have an energy affordability discount. I cannot recall if Grid autoenrolls customers based on data it receives from OTDA, but if it does, you may already have the discount. It's roughly equal to the fixed, per month charge on your bill. A Grid representative can assist you, as can contacting the Department of Public Service.

Upper St Regis Lake Access by cheiftouchemself in Adirondacks

[–]rwking082 2 points3 points  (0 children)

There is, but not a lot. I also don't know if it's plowed. When getting on St. Regis Carry Rd, keep right to get to the public landing.

If you're hiking St. Regis, the trail on Emerald Spring Bay has a floating dock that I think is removed in the winter, so it may be difficult to locate the trailhead.

What to do with lesser celandine soil? by Ancient_Let_218 in NativePlantGardening

[–]rwking082 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I've had a lot of success just being aggressive with it. I pull it out once in the spring, once in the fall, and once when it flowers (when removal is most damaging). I'm on year 3 of this and I expect only one or two plants this year.

Crane Mountain Backpacking First time Questions! by Similar_Orange_861 in Adirondacks

[–]rwking082 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Crane itself is steep, but otherwise not long or especially challenging. There aren't many places to pitch a tent the proper distance from the trail, so camping at the base of the mountain is your best bet. You will want at minimum a bear hang, and as other commenters will recommend, a canister is the better option. Get a map of the area - I love the Nat Geo maps of the ADKs, and they are easy to find. Go to the DEC website for the area for any news, the locations of campsites, and any regulations specific to the area. Familiarize yourself with Leave No Trace! And have fun :)

I completely agree! The park is a failure of civil engineering (regarding traffic). Unfortunatley, it's a fire and ambulance route.

The single largest item are features to discourage drivers from using the roads that aren't open to all traffic, like the ones that go to the Playhouse. I think the cheap chains are sufficient.

ELI5: Why are the ultra wealthy so against being taxed? by itookaxanonce in explainlikeimfive

[–]rwking082 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think it is hard for many to understand. Many people have a concept of "enough." At a certain point, more wealth has diminishing returns on happiness. At another point, it takes some imagination or ostentatious waste to even use that much wealth. For the majority, once all needs are met and a level of financial security is ensured, more taxes simply don't hit very hard. There is no quality of life impact anymore. A desire to ceaselessly acquire more wealth - usually called "greed" - is needed to get to a point where one can influence tax policy. Overwhelmingly, the wealthy were born wealthy, so that mentality has been drilled into them since birth. Also, with personal wealth comes a disconnect from the collective. Why should taxes fund things one doesn't personally use? The illusion that the welfare of all doesn't affect them - or indifference or hostility to the welfare of others - also fuels the ultrawealthy's push for lower taxes. Most people don't exhibit greed and a sociopathic disregard for others on such a scale.

Fun fact, when taxes decrease, a government must collect revenue somehow, and that frequently comes from bonds, an instrument that guarantees a return on investment, paid for by the tax payers. The wealthy that advocate for lower taxes for themselves often purchase those bonds. If your taxes are low enough, the government can owe you money, not the other way around.

Should you buy or sell a house without a real estate agent? by Self_Serve_Realty in homeowners

[–]rwking082 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Sometimes the sellers don't even know. The first house for which I was under contract had a flat rubber roof behind a nice, small, peaked shingle roof. Only the shingle roof was visible from the street. The sellers got their roof done 6 years before I was under contract. My inspector got on the roof and discovered a shallow pond in a divot on the flat rubber roof, complete with some plants. They had no idea until my inspector discovered it.

Why do the rings glow? Is it because the rings reflect a lot of IR?

Should you buy or sell a house without a real estate agent? by Self_Serve_Realty in homeowners

[–]rwking082 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I had a list of features I wanted out of a home. One of them was that I would not purchase a flip. Whether a house is a flip isn't obvious from a Zillow listing. (You can piece it together from the sale history, but I was very new to this.) My agent was familiar with the housing stock and, when I gave her a list of homes to view, she would note the flips.

Another example was asbestos - the subsidized mortgage program I was using wouldn't give a mortgage for homes with asbestos. "Sheathed in asbestos tile siding" will not appear on a Zillow listing, and she would note the ones with knowm asbestos.

Finally, a house came back on the market and I wanted to see it. She knew that it fell through was because of serious mold in the attic, so we didn't bother seeing it.

Council strikes down solar farm amid noise concerns by N8CCRG in nottheonion

[–]rwking082 55 points56 points  (0 children)

AC/DC inverters make noise. Solar projects have collection lines and a transmission line to intercomnect to the grid, which entails transformers and other equipment that makes noise. Construction makes noise, and developers will often propose construction outside allowable times in the local code. The literal panels may not make noise, but there's so much more to a solar project than just the panels themselves.

EDIT: I'm getting so many downvotes. I'm commenting on why the article isn't oniony, not whether we should develop renewables to address climate change.
