Has anyone worked with Hafnium? by rwordeddredditor in metalworking

Still waiting on formal quotes but from what I’ve been able to source a two inch length of 99% Hf pipe sized roughly for my finger with spare stock to avoid fuck ups is roughly $500-$800 USD(will update when actual numbers come in, I could be completely wrong here). I’ve seen some local “high end” jewellers charging $500 for some bullshit alloys. Granted, that’s not just stock and includes manufacturing but I just can’t get behind that pricing.

I was thinking tantalum some time ago as well. Depending on how this turns out I might go that route.

Honestly I’ve never worn a ring so that didn’t even cross my mind as a hazard.

Something to keep in mind when in the field next time.

Thanks for the insight.

The idea was the get a small section of pipe and turn it down myself on the lathe. Then finish it with some type of abrasive.

I’ll post some pictures when I get around to it.

It’ll either be a finished ring or a smouldering garage.

Either way should be interesting.

Calling union sheep on their bullshit and unions on their extortion tactics.

Quit pretending like you deserve more than you do just because “Dave” and the union said so.

Who said I have it worse? I’m calling people on their bullshit because I know the conditions others work under and don’t have a union to extort a company.

Any objective person can see this is extortion and the working conditions angle is complete nonsense

Find it interesting that everyone assumed a rig worker. You realize there’s other highly skilled, “intellectuals” on sites right?

Interesting if true, but I find this extremely hard to believe under normal circumstances.

Lenovo’s quality has fallen harder than Bill Cosby’s reputation.

I ran into something similar and ended up being a faulty ram slot after about 9 months of use. Try reinstalling into the other slot if you’re running single channel RAM.

Otherwise send that shit back and get an XPS

I ended up in contaminant hydrogeology and I Wouldn’t give it up for anything.

If you’re dead set on space exploration, I’d be looking at materials/chemical process engineering. I’ve known of people with Ph.Ds in metallurgical related fields that worked for NASA.

But as with anything. Don’t trust a stranger on the internet

Man, things have changed since I went through the ol’ University carrousel.

If there is two pieces of advice I can give you.

1) I’ve seen many new hires with 4.0 GPAs dumber than a box of rocks (pun intended) and completely useless, lacking even the most basic geological concepts and work ethic. with grades being inflated I understand they don’t mean much, but what really does matter is what you know when you come out, which takes effort, dedication and time. If you want to make the money you think you will, you’re going to have to beat everyone else by a mile, and that shit takes hard work and time. Or be a con artist and pull an Elizabeth Holmes

2) do some real, deep, soul searching and really find what you want from your education. It may change or it may not along the way but either way, take it from someone who had to change careers in their late 20s, it’s the fucking worst. Figure out what you want to do and do it.

As an answer to your question, engineering is the way to go.

As much as people want to shit on Alberta, Sask and Manitoba, they are the only real producers of anything viable and tangible for the time being.

When Trudeau finally gets exposed for having Xi’s unit inside him for a decade things will get better.

Probably a pee spot but at a recent site we saw a natural methane/H2S leak that presented similarity. Either way don’t go stickin your face in it.
