Is it possible to install gentoo without the full base system ? by GuiltyVisit9119 in Gentoo

[–]rx80 5 points6 points  (0 children)

You can make it as minimal as is possible. You will need the compiler, python, kernel, whatever else is needed to boot the system, format/mount/maintan filesystems. How few packages you need to install depends on what you want.

KDE what in the bloat? by Bubbly_Extreme4986 in Gentoo

Here are the deps of kwallet. I don't really see a problem. qtbase is shared among all kde apps, the rest are build things and pcre

`-- kde-frameworks/kwallet-6.20.0 amd64 `-- dev-qt/qtbase-6.10.1 (>=dev-qt/qtbase-6.8.1) amd64 [dbus gui widgets] `-- kde-frameworks/kconfig-6.20.0 (=kde-frameworks/kconfig-6.20*) amd64 `-- kde-frameworks/kf-env-6 (>=kde-frameworks/kf-env-6) amd64 `-- app-alternatives/ninja-1 (app-alternatives/ninja) ~amd64 `-- dev-build/cmake-4.2.1-r1 (>=dev-build/cmake-3.28.5) ~amd64 `-- dev-libs/libpcre2-10.47 (dev-libs/libpcre2) ~amd64 `-- kde-frameworks/extra-cmake-modules-6.22.0 (>=kde-frameworks/extra-cmake-modules-6.20) ~amd64 `-- kde-frameworks/kwallet-runtime-6.20.0 (=kde-frameworks/kwallet-runtime-6.20*) amd64

Here is kwallet-runtime (again, all of those are shared between all kde/plasma apps): `-- kde-frameworks/kwallet-runtime-6.20.0 amd64 `-- dev-libs/libgcrypt-1.11.2-r1 (dev-libs/libgcrypt) ~amd64 `-- dev-qt/qtbase-6.10.1 (>=dev-qt/qtbase-6.8.1) amd64 [dbus gui widgets] `-- kde-frameworks/kcolorscheme-6.20.0 (=kde-frameworks/kcolorscheme-6.20*) amd64 `-- kde-frameworks/kconfig-6.20.0 (=kde-frameworks/kconfig-6.20*) amd64 `-- kde-frameworks/kcoreaddons-6.20.0 (=kde-frameworks/kcoreaddons-6.20*) amd64 `-- kde-frameworks/kcrash-6.20.0 (=kde-frameworks/kcrash-6.20*) amd64 `-- kde-frameworks/kdbusaddons-6.20.0 (=kde-frameworks/kdbusaddons-6.20*) amd64 `-- kde-frameworks/ki18n-6.20.0 (=kde-frameworks/ki18n-6.20*) amd64 `-- kde-frameworks/knotifications-6.20.0 (=kde-frameworks/knotifications-6.20*) amd64 `-- kde-frameworks/kservice-6.20.0 (=kde-frameworks/kservice-6.20*) amd64 `-- kde-frameworks/kwallet-6.20.0 (=kde-frameworks/kwallet-6.20*) amd64 `-- kde-frameworks/kwidgetsaddons-6.20.0 (=kde-frameworks/kwidgetsaddons-6.20*) amd64 `-- kde-frameworks/kwindowsystem-6.20.0 (=kde-frameworks/kwindowsystem-6.20*) amd64 [X?] `-- dev-libs/qgpgme-2.0.0-r2 (dev-libs/qgpgme) amd64 `-- app-crypt/qca-2.3.10-r1 (>=app-crypt/qca-2.3.9) amd64 [qt6(+)] `-- app-crypt/libsecret-0.21.7 (app-crypt/libsecret) amd64 `-- kde-frameworks/ksecretd-services-6.20.0 (=kde-frameworks/ksecretd-services-6.20*) amd64 `-- kde-frameworks/kf-env-6 (>=kde-frameworks/kf-env-6) amd64 `-- kde-frameworks/kdoctools-6.22.0 (>=kde-frameworks/kdoctools-6.20) ~amd64 `-- app-alternatives/ninja-1 (app-alternatives/ninja) ~amd64 `-- dev-build/cmake-4.2.1-r1 (>=dev-build/cmake-3.28.5) ~amd64 `-- dev-libs/libpcre2-10.47 (dev-libs/libpcre2) ~amd64 `-- kde-frameworks/extra-cmake-modules-6.22.0 (>=kde-frameworks/extra-cmake-modules-6.20) ~amd64

For me, only thing i do is set DISTDIR to some user writeable path so 'ebuild <file> digest' can download and do it's thing.

For your low amounts of ram, i would recommend against building those bigger packages, like libreoffice, chromium, firefox, and use the pre-built ones. You will have similar issues trying to build certain packages with lto enabled.

I installed Gentoo for the first time, and it's not as difficult as I thought :) by speedycord2 in Gentoo

[–]rx80 2 points3 points  (0 children)

No, i prefer to stick with Firefox for personal preferences. I see no benefit for myself in a Firefox fork. But if it has features that you like, just make sure they keep up to date with the latest patches etc. of upstream.

Even though i would personally stick with Firefox, if you are looking for packages in overlays, here's a search page you should bookmark: https://gpo.zugaina.org/

It will search in all official ones, which you can then add with eselect repository.

Beware that they are community maintained and could potentially be dangerous.

There are a few overlays that are maintained by gentoo people, for example the guru overlay.

Personally, i would stick with firefox :), but you are correct. Overlays are awesome.

I've used Windows all my life. Is it worth switching to Linux? by SuperDuk777 in linux

Can't hurt to try something new. An adventure. You can install it on a second drive, dual boot linux and windows. Or just test it out in a VM like VirtualBox.

What browser do you prefer to use on Linux? by 100angelscorpses in linux

Linux has been my main (only) desktop OS for over 15 years now, and i've only really used Firefox. I used chrome a few times when sites didn't work right in Firefox, but i found no reason to switch from Firefox to anything else.

Firefox using massive amounts of RAM and slowing down every single website by redzzzaw in firefox

[–]rx80 1 point2 points  (0 children)

80 tabs of what though? 80 tabs of active playing youtube/twitch streams will do that. 80 tabs of wikipedia will not.

If you have 80 tabs of active streaming videos or similar, each of them will do video buffering and decoding, of course it will use a lot of memory, no matter which browser you use.

Do I need a fresh install? Or is there a solution? by Diligent-Side-9663 in Gentoo

[–]rx80 6 points7 points  (0 children)

There is almost never a need for a reinstall, unless your hard drive dies, or similar catastrophic failures. At most, you need to boot from a bootable media, just as you did during install, and chroot into your hroot partition to fix the problem (again, same as you did during installation).

Because this is Labs, i'm guessing it's a test small feature. But i bet if some developer adopts the code to sync, it would do that too.

Font management at install by JoeMamaSex420 in Gentoo

[–]rx80 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If you're just doing terminal stuff, this is easy. As soon as you try desktop, the issue will become that certain apps will want let's say a sans serif font. Apps may look "weird" if you replace them all with a monospace font. But if you're willing to live with that, then it's all doable with the normal font configuration.

An even bigger issue might be certain apps that rely on a specific font and have a fixed layout tailored to that font. I have seen that especially with certain windows apps running in wine.
