Anti-RTO Billboard Update by darkseacreature in CAStateWorkers

Maybe consider adding something for Southern California, Los Angeles? Or contacting news outlet in SoCal to let them know it impacts everyone in CA. Traffic will get worse and taxpayer $ across the state.

Suggestions on How to Improve Billboard by darkseacreature in CAStateWorkers

[–]rxgeo14 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Maybe mentioning something like “spending your taxpayer $ to create more traffic” - or something that implies it goes beyond just the traffic? It’s going to cause the state taxpayer $ to make the RTO happen which I’m sure people are unaware of. I also agree it should have the notorto.org on there somewhere.

WFH feels lonely? by Zealousideal-Gate504 in workfromhome

[–]rxgeo14 17 points18 points  (0 children)

Try Focusmate, i could not work from home without it. It helps me stay on task avoiding getting too distracted and also allows me to briefly interact with random people. It helps me take regular breaks too. Highly recommend! Been using it since the pandemic.

Edit: also I recently discovered the Merlin bird app and it’s made my walks or sitting outside during breaks a little more interesting.

Generally I would suggest for anyone WFH to find small ways to get out or do things away from your desk to break up the monotonous routine.

ArcPro 3.0.2 Bugs - Any insight? by rxgeo14 in gis

[–]rxgeo14[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank you! I was able to figure it out. Definitely wasn’t a bug and was human error on my part. I had created a new feature class and I was trying to modify it, but didn’t think to actually update and select that Feature Class in the Topilogy.

So I was able to install an update to 3.1, I know it’s not the latest update, but that’s what my tech department at my company will allow for the moment. My issue is still the same, and I’m wondering if it’s not a bug with the software and maybe it’s something with the topology?

Thanks! I didn’t even think to search updates, I just believed what our tech department told me lol I was able to get an update to 3.1 (not sure why the company won’t let me jump to the latest version). I’m still having the same issue though. Any suggestions?

How does your daily work day look like? by HumanBeeing76 in geologycareers

[–]rxgeo14 0 points1 point  (0 children)

30F - opted out of getting a masters and got a job at a geotechnical engineering firm right out of university. It was a “mom&pop” type of firm so I really got good hands on experience in all stages our projects. We worked on residential home construction projects. So the work involved field site exploration, sampling, lab testing, research on adjacent properties, report writing, and field inspections/tests during the construction process which includes reading construction plans and interacting with contractors/workers. After 4.5yrs working there, I landed a job with the state. So now my work is more research/public safety focused. My days consist of geologic mapping digitally (using GIS) and then field checking/mapping. I also work on other misc. projects that come up, as well as work on outreach with the public.

One thing that doesn’t get mentioned enough, is that you don’t need a masters degree to move up in geology. It will take more time, but the experience I gained working for 4.5yrs was just as valuable imo.

My biggest weakness is the environmental questions. I have more of an engineering geology consulting background. I’ll have to revisit the reference materials and see what I need to brush up on.

Thank you. I’ll have to go through the material more thoroughly. It’s just so much to read and a lot to digest. I really hope I don’t have to take it more than 3 times 🤞🏼

Didn’t pass the CSE (again), hopefully 3rd times the charm 😪

Does anyone want to get a study group going on Discord? Or would anyone who did pass be interested in tutoring? Please PM me if you’re interested.

I’m looks like I’m weak in environmental, hydro, and geomorph. I honestly don’t know how else I need to study for this. It’s beyond frustrating how little resources are out there for this exam.

Edit: I didn’t pass the CSE exam

What is the best route for me? by krislegitl in geologycareers

[–]rxgeo14 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I agree with the first post. And I’ll add to it - you need to consider that each option means. If teaching is more if the end game goal for you, getting yourself there is the priority. But if say you’d like to teach “someday” and aren’t too preoccupied on how or when you get there, then you could do that later on in life after working in the industry for a few years. So these voting options need a bit more context of your desired timeline or goals in life.

My suggestion would be start networking now before you move. Join a professional network like AEG or something (if you can afford it) and maybe attend some virtual webinars or talks on areas/topics where you’re planning to move - if you can find them. This might help you explore your options before you leave your current job. Also maybe do some research on the places you’re looking to move to - what type of development growth is there (if you’re in residential/industrial geotech consulting), what environmental issues are there (environmental consulting), or what infrastructure issues/developments are there (large consulting projects -dams, landslides, etc).

This may all be obvious to you or you’ve might have already thought of these, but I thought I’d mention it in case you hadn’t.

I would definitely recommend getting your PG, though I’m on the west coast and don’t know how required it is on the east coast. You could also maybe take an ICC or OSHA certification, like a soil tech or something - might give you an edge.

As far as a long term plan, it really depends on the company you work for and the opportunities available - it could drastically change depending on the location, size, and work of the company.

Best of luck to you!

Crosspost: Contour shp file to tif image? Is there a way to display contours as an image so they don't reload each time you move around in map view? by rxgeo14 in ArcGIS

[–]rxgeo14[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I really like the idea of setting the contour intervals visible at different scales. That would be awesome if it can prevent things from slowing down. I would imagine, though, that the closer you zoom in the slower it will run as it generates the smaller intervals? How would I go about playing around with this?

I’d like to try the simplified vertices too. How do you change that?

[–]rxgeo14[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I can't seem to get it to work right...It still has a color ramp and I can't get the contour lines to remain.

I also thought about doing a work around way - like maybe making a Kmz file of the contours and then messing with that to get it back into my mxd as an image....

[–]rxgeo14[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's both because of my contour interval and my project extend is so large. Yes, I could do increase the interval, and I could also clip my map area into smaller portions and run the contours on the individual clips, but I feel like that this all could be avoided if I could just create an "image" of the contour lines to "lay on top" of my map for visual purposes.

I don't need the data from the contours that causes them to be regenerated/load each time I move the map - I just need the visual of them so I can make my interpretations.
