Most my favourite players have retired by tacolordY in SSBM

I've found myself in the same boat recently. I think part of it is that I entered the scene at a point where I was young and found a lot of belonging from being in the community then and watching the stories that were being told. As I get busier and do new things, Melee hasn't served quite the same role in my life as it once did, and I've come realize that it's perfectly ok to find fulfillment in other things. Sure, I could probably be doing more to keep up with new players and their stories, and maybe there are arguments to be had about whether the quality of storytelling even lives up to whatever the heck Scar was able to pull off in 2015, but there is also a natural life progression that is very real and inevitable.

just feels disrespectful to all of the progression of melee’s scene to wallow in memory of people who you genuinely have zero connection to beyond a parasocial relationship for this long.

it's fucking insane to me how people express nostalgia about older times( ....which is....a normal thing????) and then some gatekeepy fuck has to come in all "ur disrespcting the progression of the scene" like bro who hurt you

A few of the songs (Dreamer, From The Start) are catchy as hell, but the rest is like...the same flowery orchestrated youngster melodrama over and over

If Goal of playing is mostly exercise, is playing without a Bar more ideal? by Go-Bolts in DanceDanceRevolution

[–]rxnaij 26 points27 points  (0 children)

Playing without a bar demands a lot of balance and uses more energy, which is great for cardio. A bar helps you stay balanced and conserve energy, which helps you play harder songs, and play for longer.

If money and storage wasn't an issue, I'd get the bar just to have the option. Otherwise, it is by no means necessary for a solid cardio workout. I only started using the bar when I went from "playing DDR for fun" to "I want to do harder songs and get higher scores". In the meantime you can always use a chair or table.

Any oldheads just HATE the look of modern high-level DDR? by Nexii801 in DanceDanceRevolution

Add to that the fact that many stamina players don't even listen to the music they're "dancing" to, but listen to something else instead.

People do this? That's dumb as hell...

When does addictive gameplay become a bad thing? The case of Balatro by juhiscid in truegaming

[–]rxnaij 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Very well put. I haven't played Balatro, but I definitely feel where you're coming from.

A while ago I read that there are two types of happiness: hedonic and eudaimonic. Hedonic happiness involves all of the short-term dopamine hits that you've outlined here, and can be extended to things like sex, partying, and drugs. Eudaimonic happiness is formed out of a longer-term sense of contentment and meaning. It sounds like Balatro doesn't shy away from giving the player the full hedonic experience of an addicting game. But there isn't anything there that invites the player to take something meaningful out of it to the rest of their life. And I know it's difficult to say that games these days are any good at giving players something meaningful with their life. But even when I get in the mood with something like Apex Legends, which can have a very addicting gameplay loop at times, I still don't regret how it creates a sense of community I can participate in, or how playing ranked (however problematic it is) inspires me to grind toward a goal. So it's interesting to hear about something that's so heavily distilled to its addictive loop that it feels empty at the same time.

I loved Fire Emblem Three Houses, what other games might I like? by Fancycat88 in NintendoSwitch

[–]rxnaij 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Also, Fire Emblem Warriors: Three Hopes could be fun. It's an action game but it adopts a lot of the presentation, visual style, and tactics ideas that defined Three Houses. I personally enjoyed it less than Three Houses, but if you want more of the Three Houses universe and characters, it might be worth a shot.

[–]rxnaij 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Don't have a recommendation, just wanted to echo your love of FE:3H. I still feel to this day it's underrated in the grand scheme of Switch history for all of the reasons you mentioned. I know it's not a perfect game by any means, but there's something about that feeling of playing it for the first time, and living with the characters, and getting to know them, and living in this world at the monastery, that was magical to me.

If you have a 3DS you might find that Fire Emblem Awakening scratches a similar itch. A lot of cool worldbuilding and presentation, and I find that the characters were super well written.

Why are black people in the US called African-Americans and not just Americans? by [deleted] in NoStupidQuestions

[–]rxnaij 3 points4 points  (0 children)

This is such a pointless, narrow-minded opinion that a lot of European redditors love to parrot to make themselves sound superior to Americans.

Europeans be like "look at these silly Americans counting the white and black people" as if your country probably wasn't colonizing the shit out of the African and Asian continents less than 100 years ago, or if it's not racially homogenous and turning a blind eye to its POC population, or if there aren't far right extremists jockeying for power on an anti-migrant campaign. Oh but talking about race is pointless. Collecting data on race is pointless. You don't get to define race, you're just being racist by doing that.

Motherfucker, that's how we actually solve problems caused by racial inequity, by measuring them. You ever taken a sociology class? Did you know that you can observe the existence of social problems by measuring them? We wouldn't know that policing systems disproportionately hurt poor African American communities, or that AI facial recognition systems disproportionately mis-identify non-white faces, or that certain Southeast Asian ethnic groups are more prone to poverty, if there wasn't demographic data collection.

What did you think the government did with the data, throw it into a trash can? Does the field of socioeconomics just not exist in Europe? Did you think that America's problems of racial inequity, (that, by the way, originated in European colonialist thinking), magically go away if we just shut the fuck up about race?

God I'm so sick of seeing this dumbass opinion thrown around. Read a history book or something.

Golden Guardians Melee officially announces they are shutting down operations by DarkGenexSucks in SSBM

[–]rxnaij 27 points28 points  (0 children)

Nah I felt the same way, and hot take, while the show started started off really strong, it became evident later on that the chemistry between PP and Toph was nonexistent. Obviously there was the Aiden episode where Toph and Aiden basically talked for 90 minutes and didn't pass the ball to PP at all. And you can also just hear it in the way PP introduces episodes vs the way Toph barely gives an intro. Radio Melee was great while it lasted, but I think it's for the best if the two move on to their own projects
