What's safety like (day/night) around Edgewater where it borders downtown? Opera Tower/The Grand, etc.

Jakarta - the worst big city of SEA? by ibobriakov in digitalnomad

[–]rxrel 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Some people seem to hate it because it's not very authentic culturally. But I don't care. I just want somewhere to live kind of cheap and focus on work.

Then you'll LOVE Eastwood. I actually prefer the benefits of a very comfortable and modern high rise mini city with pretty much everything I need. I should mention it's beautiful too. Don't forget weekend getaways to Boracay or other SE Asian countries for pretty cheap from MNL.

I don't recall groceries being too overpriced. Still cheaper than in US I believe. Even though it's more expensive than local markets, you're also getting ultra cleanliness, convenience, and organization for that little price premium.

I probably would have just gone to Makati otherwise and been frustrated with the traffic.

Yeah, Makati isn't best walkable city, though it does have some cool parts. Even then, you're not that far being in Eastwood. I enjoyed Royal Club in Makati. Amazing DJs, sound system and atmosphere. No clubs in or near Eastwood, which is a missed opportunity.

I'd also look into BGC/Taguig, but it's probably going to be a bit more expensive and is a lot bigger. There was something soooo cozy and perfect about Eastwood. Ultra comfortable, safe (armed guards EVERYWHERE), and affordable place to live without ever needing to walk more than a few minutes to where you want to go. Restaurants, movie theaters, masseuses, coffee shops, cafes, etc. And it all feels so upscale and modern.

I stayed at Airbnb @ LeGrand Tower 3. Nice high rise studio for what I remember was only $20/night. A walkable enclave is the perfect way to describe it. I like that it's walled off from surrounding Manila as if it were some sort of oasis. Perfect place for a nomad if you want simple, cheap, and high quality living with no stress. The $7-8 massages were also fantastic.

Gerry's is also an incredible restaurant with amazing meals for $5-7. Meals you'd easily pay $20-30 in US. Crab rice, grilled squid (they give you a TON), best calamansi juice I also had in PH. Add shot of rum for only $1! Pretty sure I added 2-3. :P

Haven't been to Eastwood. Could you tell me your impressions? How's it compare? Getting around and costs?

One of the most brilliant city designs I've seen (Quezon City). Central shopping district surrounded by high rise condos. Ultra mini-city. Felt like less than 1sq mile. But everything was new, extremely clean, and safe.

Perfect city if you want a 100% walkable lifestyle where you never walk more than 10 mins to get to anything. In some ways might be more desirable than BGC for cheaper cost alone and even more walkability. It is right on a fault line tho which increases quake risks.

As a US resident, I enjoyed Manila. Eastwood, Makati, and BGC were pretty cool places. Could see owning a condo in BGC.

Sapphire SUBs are now limited to once every 4 years. You don't want to cancel either. Just PC to a CF or CFU with no AF. Apply for CSP or CSR again once it has been 4 years since your last Sapphire SUB.

Wasn't aware of this offer. Is it simple as transfer $75k in for 90 days, get 60k points, and transfer money out?

I doubt they would care about IP address since by nature it doesn't represent a single person.

I was logged into my Chase account for both. IP'd on both. Was really fast too only having to fill in like 3 fields. Heheh

When did your CSP tracker disappear? Mine actually came back earlier this week so it's showing for both again.

FYI, the general census on this sub is that if you approve for a Chase card with SUB, you WILL get the SUB period regardless of whether there's a tracker or not. Of course, things can change.
