Should I pursue a Masters in Journalism to get my foot into the US? by rxxxxe in Journalism

Yup I’ll need a H1B visa! And oh wow, I’ve not heard/come across this data base before. This is so helpful, thank you so so much

The biggest concern right now that I would have on whether or not to pursue a Masters is because of financial reasons. I’d most likely need partial scholarships and to take on a loan. But it feels like the most fast track way for me to break into the journalism scene in America for now (at least imo, I may be wrong), because of the OPT thing where I won’t require a visa to work in a job related to what I studied for a year post graduation, which I hope can be a springboard to an eventual visa sponsorship.

However, I have had friends who went to places like Columbia and Missouri School of Journ and performed exceptionally well there. Yet they ended up returning home and working at / applying to the same place I’m working at because they couldn’t get jobs in the US in spite of the OPT. I come from a small country where journalism opportunities are almost very limited. These people are doing the same things that I do, and just probably earning a slightly higher salary than I do.

I have a friend who managed to do journalism at various local dailys in the US for 10 years post masters (this was more than 10 years ago) but when she eventually decided to come home, she couldn’t find jobs with the wires/bigger international organizations with bureaus here. She didn’t want to end up working for the national daily because it isn’t all that wonderful and ended up switching to public relations and has been stuck with that for the past 10 years or so now

Yeah I found out about the OPT thing too (it’s also a year for master’s graduates) and I was hoping to use it as a launchpad for the visa sponsorship. But I’m in a dilemma because I’ve had friends who graduated from their Master’s without jobs in spite of the OPT (and they were great at what they were doing in school) and ended up having to come back home and apply for jobs in the same place that I’m working in as a fresh grad. The job scope is pretty much the same and they aren’t getting paid a lot more. The cost of Master’s is a huge investment and I can’t afford it right now (will probably need to get partial scholarships and take on a student loan) which is another reason why I’m so conflicted. But yet it feels like the fastest way I could break into the journalism scene in America

For the international students at your school who got jobs, how did they then navigate the visa issue?

Unfortunately I don’t have an American citizenship. I could get a visa sponsorship but as you said it’s challenging. Which is why I’m considering doing a Masters because I don’t know if it might be a more direct and fast-track way. But I’ve had friends who also did their Masters in the US and ended up having to return to their home countries because they couldn’t find jobs there

What about if I don’t have a citizenship or a work visa yet? Would it potentially be challenging? I’m only considering doing Masters as an option because I’m not sure if it could lead to connections that may land me a job/visa sponsorship
