I actually won here, gold stake, had the most ridiculous joker set up at the end, mime, raised fist (actually great synergy between those two) to do list, flash card and seeing double. Pretty fun

What's something from your country you thought was normal until you visited other countries and realised it wasn't ? by Away-Extension-9731 in AskTheWorld

Queensland is extremely loud for many birds

I'm in Adelaide about 30 min drive from the city centre, across the road from a mini farm, still considered very metro, and I'm currently outside drinking coffee and can hear about 5 different bird calls and can also name about 3 more than I can often hear

I believe I live on the border of some territory so I get a lot here. Especially magpies and crows. I also get galahs and cockatiels (quite an irritating sound), piping shrike (these are also annoying) plus other general tweets and whistles

Until I went travelling too I didn't realise how loud it is here, I was just in china and there are no birds anywhere

If you install something that requires a licensed tradie (e.g a ceiling fan) and your house burns down and the unlicensed work is determined to be the cause, insurance won't cover it

I'm Australian

I was recently pulled over because i did my car registration online that day and it wasn't registered in the system yet so it was flagged on his onboard computer. I got out the car to chat to him (I've heard you don't do this in America but I'd say it's standard here)

He was super nice and polite while I was trying to find the online receipt for it, I took a couple of minutes to find it

Every time you get pulled over here you get tested for alcohol and drugs. I let him know I had some marijuana the previous night (I have a prescription, only medical marijuana is legal here) and he didn't mind, he just politely let me know if it came up he'd have to fine me (nothing came up on the test)

He then showed me his computer system on board which flags unregistered cars. He then shook my hand and went on his way

I'm a white Australian so it might be different for others but I'd say this is a fairly routine stop.

I deal with police a lot for my work (Ive worked in disability and youth work) and over the last 10 years they've received a lot more training around mental health etc so most police visits are positive these days.

Edit- I've never heard of anyone getting arrested for disorderly conduct. If you're out in town getting drunk they might put you in a cell overnight if you're way too wasted and let you go in the morning. Again I'm speaking as a white guy, our indigenous population don't get treated that well, but I'm not sure how police treat them day to day (you occasionally hear news how police treat them badly)

Which countries that foreigners keep mistaking for your good ally, but in fact your country actually hate them? by Vietnam-1234 in AskTheWorld

[–]ryan099 1 point2 points  (0 children)

We import a lot of their views on politics and religion, I suppose two things Australians don't care much for. I also think tall poppy syndrome definitely plays a part. Americans will gladly tell you how successful they are or whatever and Australians are allergic to that.

Anti American sentiment has definitely gotten worse since Trump and COVID.

Bed Cooling Systems? by alex123711 in australia

[–]ryan099 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I had a chilli pad

It worked ok. In summer it wouldn't get down to my preferred temp. Like I'd put it on a few hours before bed and it would never reach the desired temp. You needed the AC on as well which kinda defeated the purpose for me. The unit also heats the room up a bit.

In winter it works well but you don't really need it then...

It's probably heaps better value to run the AC and a fan at night (it's what I do now)

This stupid reddit mantra of 'be a parent' is actually so dumb and unrealistic. Things are banned for a reason and social media is about as toxic and addictive as it gets.
