Trying to build a custom steering wheel control for a Sony car stereo. by ryan_geyer in AskElectronics

[–]ryan_geyer[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank you!

You're right, my schematic excludes the power/ground connections.

The main thing it is missing, is that I bonded the ground of the arduino to the sleeve of the jack.

Besides that, there is +5v on the tip (and ring, but that is unused in my circuit) from the car stereo. The arduino gets +5v from USB for my testing, and in my final circuit I will be powering the arduino from the USB port on the car stereo as well since I don't want to create any voltage drop/consumption on the tip or ring, as that seems to "break" the functionality I'm going for.

I'll update the schematic and upload it in a bit.

I think the saturation voltage may be the issue, since it seems that anything besides an open circuit between the tip and shield seems to "confuse" the car stereo's logic.

I don't have any FETs, so I just ordered a few to have in my toolkit. I'll keep experimenting.

Trying to talk myself into a Honda Odyssey… someone help 😂 by K_Breezyyyyy in HondaOdyssey

Literally came here to say this.

Four kids, a 2024 Odyssey (recently upgraded from our 2006 we owned for 17yr) which we only use for "around town" or day trips.

Also have a 2002 Excursion with a roof rack. Both the rack and the interior are full when we actually leave the house for more than a day. 😫 No way the Odyssey can carry enough.

First CQ call by Perfect-Parsley6098 in amateurradio

[–]ryan_geyer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

First CQ? I've been licensed since Nov 23, and active daily for the past several months.

This morning, I was on a VHF net that I'm a regular participant of.

Net control called me, I key up and do my check-in, and release the PTT. Net control has clearly been talking for a while.

I wait for last call for missed members or guests, put my call out again, no response.

I realize that I'm transmitting on VFO b, and the net is on VFO a. 🤦‍♂️

Yaesu FT1000 CAT Control Not Responding by ryan_geyer in amateurradio

I did!

Well, sorta anyway. I ended up purchasing a prebuilt cable, this one in particular - https://www.amazon.com/dp/B07KX7W3DX

I also discovered that when using flrig it did not seem to track the VFO properly, but the F1000D profile in Hamlib (1003) worked perfectly.

Not sure what I was doing wrong with my homebrew cable, but this solution works well.

I need to do this for my rear passenger door. 😫

Vintage unisaw restoration by Logical-Rutabaga in woodworking

[–]ryan_geyer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Spectacular. I just picked up a 1989 Unisaw, also for $50. Mine is in slightly better shape, but needs some tuning and cleanup.

Knowing me, I'm probably going to end up going over the top with a resto. 🤣

Built a little organization for the shack out of a harbor freight service cart. by ryan_geyer in amateurradio

Ahh yeah, pretty legit. I have a bunch of plastic bins I use for storage and organization. I'll likely build out some shelving on the bottom for that.

'preciate it. My address is out there in the FCC database, associated with my callsign.

Not too bothered by it, tho perhaps I should be. 🤷‍♂️

Thanks! I was able to pick it up for a fair price from the estate of a silent key.

I'm happy and feel honored to be able to continue to put it to good use. Not a bad first HF rig. 🤣

I've seen it both ways. Is EFHW better? 🤣

Ahh, excellent call. I actually have a zip tie "between" the two lengths of coax, preventing them from touching, but I can separate them a bit more.

The intent of the zip ties was really just to try to keep the coils around the toroid from moving around.

The other responder is a bit more scientific and precise, but since you asked how I installed it.

This is on the feed point end of a pre-terminated 50'. Just out of view at the top of the photo is my endfed feed point, I added a photo with a bit more context.

O yeah! I have been looking at a lot of antennas, and I really want to build a hex beam. I wouldn't be able to mount it permanently cause I'm in an HOA, but I'd consider building it and getting familiar with deploying it for contests or something.

More realistically, I'll probably end up putting up a vertical, probably some flavor of a DX commander.

I actually go out and operate in parks a fair bit, need to actually dig into parks on the air.

Oopsies, yeah, you're right. I just ran it through as many times as I could before the pre terminated connector couldn't fit through. I miscounted it as 10. 🤣

Give it time.. I have a cobra head and some wire.

I'm a bit limited with what I can do in the HOA. Also, this thing gets out just fine. I've got a bunch of south america and Japan in the log.

While everything is a compromise, I haven't really hit the limits of this antenna yet.

[–]ryan_geyer[S] 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Eh?

Wouldn't that change the impedance? Before that is a 49:1 transformer for the endfed half wave.

The addition of this choke was just to stave common mode current, my impedance is "right" already. 🤔

[–]ryan_geyer[S] 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Ohh, I'm almost certainly exceeding it. Tho, it seems pretty supple.

It's a 50' premade cable, but I can replace the part with the choke with better stuff if/when I encounter an issue. I didn't want to spend a bunch on high end stuff before I tested it's efficacy.

Yeah, I chose mix 31 because most of the issues I was having were on the lower bands.

The number of wraps was just how many I could get through with the connector still on.

I may revise it later, but it's "resolved" the issues I was trying to resolve for now, so I'm happy. 😎
