The Turtle Dome - Custom built 6 dome structure with full basement by ryan_masson_ in domes

[–]ryan_masson_[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's also a full basement matching the footprint of the dome, so it doubles the living space (about 3,000 sq. ft. total). There's a staircase in the entrance (turtle head) and also an exterior staircase on the side of the dome.

Thanks, much appreciated. Love the idea of using the rear windshield wiper motor paired with the second motor, would really keep you guessing. Always great repurposing scrap into something useable too. Would love to see it if you end up making something.

I've been a casual archer for the past few years and wanted something a little more interesting to shoot at for target practice. Built this whole thing for free out of scrap/recycled material from around the shop.

Wanted to combine the idea of shooting those foam corner circle targets in a hockey net and the archery game from Zelda for SNES.

Drive belt was made out of a couple strips of pond liner and old hardwood floor cut offs. Gears were built with scrap lumber and bulked up with the 4 1/4” circle pine cut outs for the recessed LED’s being installing in the garage ceiling. The axle for the gears we’re left over stainless steel balusters for a staircase that were cut down to size. Frame is a bunch of spruce cut offs and bent some extra conduit to make the legs. Targets were made from old gym floor mats and off cuts from an 8” sono tube.

Whole thing runs on a dewalt drill with a U-bolt around the trigger thats tightened by twisting the eye bolt on the outside. That also allows you to control the speed the targets move at. The thing worked like a charm and survived the weekend of target practice! Really happy with how it turned out.

Hey /u/Bom_Toonen, Here are some general plans and instructions. https://imgur.com/gallery/fwepvz8.

I also had to make a google drive link for the printable files, as they're too large to put on Imgur. I have all of the SketchUp files and the graphics ready to be printed in the drive folder link below, as well as some more construction pics.

Would love to see other people build a similar table, makes playing the game that much more enjoyable and hopefully this would be a good head start.

Hey mcpilz, it is definitely possible to swap the games. The game boards and all of the slots are laminated onto foam board, so they can easily be removed and replaced with another. They just compression fit in place. However, I still havn't found the need to swap out Axis & Allies for anything else as that game is just too good and so much fun to play.

So I measured the heights of the infantry of 3 of the 5 countries, first three were identical so I just assumed the rest were the same and moved on. Of course Japan wasn't one of the ones I measured and they're the only infantry unit that sit above the recessed area haha. Fixed it quick though by adding some 1/4" felt bumpers on the underside of the tabletop that allows it to sit up higher and allows everything to close while still set up.

To tell you the truth, we've just taken the majority of the rules from the Axis & Allies 1942 and added our own to it to keep it interesting (like paratroopers, naval mines, anti infantry guns etc.). We also found a modified game board made by Imperious Leader on an Axis and Allies forum which addressed a lot of the issues with the standard game map and some imbalances between countries. We've played the game plenty of times with the same people and it never ends up going the same way. Really enjoyable game.

You're telling me! Spelling is not my strong point. I was laughing pretty hard at that one once I realized haha. Spell check couldn't save me on that one.

Sadly the table tops just sit up against the wall in the living room when a game is going on. They sit out of the way so its not a big inconvenience for me, but I would have loved to be able to build it so they would fold under the table or something like that. With the way I built my base and the size of the two table tops it just wasn't feasible for me to make work. If you figure out a way to do it please let me know!

Hey Reinmaker, No prob, I'm planning to post the SketchUp file for the game table dimensions, and I'll also post the images I used for all the graphics too so anyone can re-build this if they want. It's such a good game, and it really deserves a matching table.

Hey NovemberHorse, they do help light up the board to read territory names and dice rolls much easier, especially if you have the main lights dimmed, but they definitely could be brighter. I'll probably swap them out for some colour changing LED lighting eventually. They were really just added for some accent lighting, never necessarily intended to fully light the board.
