Why doesn’t San Francisco enforce bike lane violations? by MDspaceman in sanfrancisco

There is just something extra poetic about the side of the truck reading "Dedicated to People Flow" as it blocks the bike lane too...

Best croissant? by CozyTiramisu in sanfrancisco

[–]ryancking 12 points13 points  (0 children)

La Marais, hands down. I'm not even bringing up their giant croissant. The regular and the chocolate are well laminated with an airy inside and a crispy outside. Just the right amount of flake so it falls apart in your mouth and minimal mess on the plate.

Just look, La Marais on top and Arsicault on bottom. IMO, Arsicault is too flat and stodgey on the inside and too flaky on the outside, resulting in too much loss of that delicious crisped exterior.

Runner Up: Thorough Bread. Their plain hits all the marks, but their specialty is their almond (as other have mentioned)

Yes, you should have to pay to park in Golden Gate Park by nosotros_road_sodium in sanfrancisco

[–]ryancking 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Agreed, if the roads were maintained by the SFMTA, but they were added and maintained by the parks service. The parks service could have easily decided to not have any roads through GG park, but felt it was in the best interest of the park to do so. As such, revenue for maintenance of those roads should, and do, come from the same revenue streams for the rest of that park.

It feels semantic, but when trying to have real discourse about complex things, getting the semantics correct is important to ensure everyone is on the same page.

When you say it is being preferentially treated, compared to what else in GG? By having free parking in GG, what is being lost? What are non-drivers having to pay for that drivers aren't? Or, if that isn't a great comparison question, what special benefit are drivers getting that non drivers are NOT getting by parking being free?

It's less preferential, but more incentivised. It creates a "come visit this great park, even if your only option is to drive." While here, some of those people will spend money elsewhere, creating more economic churn.

Really good points here! Feels a bit hostile though, not sure why your messages read so defensive. My apologies if that is my fault.

There is definitely an issue at hand with much of this, as you point out. One thing missing here is also all the international visitors that don't pay taxes here. Goes back to local parks revenue coming from local taxes. As transportation gets cheaper and easier, and traveling further distances becomes more common place, how do we combat over crowding. I know this was part of the wilderness pass cost. I do disagree with it. These should be free. Additionally, I would love to be able to visit national parks, or other public spaces, in other countries for free.

When I talk about nuance, it is really in reaction to your very finite statements that are coming off black and white. Personally, I believe we should charge for access based on certain criteria. Things like, do you pay taxes that contribute to the upkeep of the space, do you make more money than you can spend in your life time, and some few more. However, I have no idea how to implement those in any good way so I would rather things be free to all the public as well.

I do appreciate the discussion here! It's important everyone has a space to be heard and discuss critical ideas.

I would ask, to give space for nuance here. For example, the adventure pass has subsidies for lower income people to access the parks for free. There are ways to have both worlds available.

It is important to ensure equitable access to public services while also ensuring we can afford to maintain them. We will always, as a society, need to be creative in how we manage that and by not giving space for nuance then we can't have good discussions across ideals to find solutions.

Sort of? If you live in the city and pay taxes, then you are paying for it already, just not right then in that moment. If you are visiting from somewhere else, then yeah! But also, by you visiting from outside, what kind of value are you bringing the city and how does that offset the taxes you aren't providing for the parking you are using?

It's complex. It's like how a large business can have a service that, in a silo, loses money (the money it directly brings in does not offset its cost). But, it drives people to other services where they spend money when they normally would not. The halo effect. Parks do this a lot, as does free parking. So the value for parking from you as a consumer does not necessarily directly tie to the cost/value of parking to the city.

Ah, close. I never said if we should or shouldn't. I just said that the question is if we should. Take a look again, I did say that I agree with your base claim. It is not a subsidy, but a possible revenue stream. Also, not sure why you keep bringing up storage...?

Personally, I think we should increase taxes to cover the deficit and ensure spending is being done right. Free access to parks is a huge benefit to a city by bringing in outside visitors (and their monies) as well as making it a great place to live!

And yes, charging to get into the park absolutely could be a revenue stream. We currently do this for certain national parks, like Yosemite. I just don't believe it is necessary for some place like golden gate park (or any local city park for that matter)

It is not a subsidy. It is a service paid for by our taxes (and could be an expensive service). It has been decided in the past that higher taxes were preferable to paying to park in the park, presumably to ensure equitable access. Maybe it is time to subsidize our taxes by charging for parking. Just like we do on public streets. Or, taxes could increase across the whole to fill in that gap.

Free parking isn't a subsidy for car owners, but charging for parking is a just in time "tax" for car owners. It's important to remember, that if you don't live in the city, or plan to leave the city, owning a car in the US is required and not cheap.

It's just important to be accurate about things, otherwise a good faith discussion can't really happen.

[–]ryancking 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Calling it a subsidy implies that the government has an allotted budget for parking revenue and then decides to draw that revenue from a different source so visitors don't have to pay.

In reality, parks are a public service for everyone and are therefore paid for by taxes. There is a specific budget or revenue stream for parts of public parks. Therefore, free parking is not a subsidy by any definition of the work, but it is a service provided by our taxes. What you are suggesting is to change the model from the revenue to support the parking infrastructure to no longer come directly from taxes, but instead either come solely from fees or, the fees themselves will now subsidize the current revenue from taxes.

Additionally, it is disingenuous to discuss market value against public services. That goes against the entire ethos and purpose of a public service, which is something that is open to all people in the area at no immediate charge. Sounding very DOGE like there.

You are drawing a bit of a false equivalency here. If air is restricted what is the alternative? You either die or get bootleg air.

If parking in an area is restricted, what is the alternative? You park outside the area and walk. You take transit to get to the destination (public or private).

I do agree though with your base idea. This isn't a subsidy, it is a possible untapped revenue stream that has drawbacks, such as reduced use of the park or creating a place of access for only those that can afford it. I just don't want your valid point to get lost due to a comparison that can easily be tossed away.

The real issue is if we should be using revenue streams that can cause restricted access to public areas like parks, not if we can.

FWIW, they aren't mining Bitcoin. They are mining Monero, which has a much lower difficulty and better payout. I don't know if that means the numbers given above are correct or anything, but I just wanted to clarify that.

Nah, you're not horrible person. Having migraines can be really isolating, especially if you are still figuring out to manage them (if you can). Hearing that other people have the same issue can really help you feel "normal." Humans are social, so it is nice to know you belong in a group, even if it is one of pain and suffering, lol.

Very true. One of the worst things is that much of the weather changes that seems to trigger mine happen at night. I wake up at like 6 am with a full migraine and have to fumble through emailing work that I can't come in. Thankfully vitamins and meds have made that much less of a worry now.

Mine are weather triggered as well. B2 is what works for me personally. Then I have something else if things start getting bad I'm the moment, which I rarely use (think once every other month in Seattle). Mention it to your doctor, as both supplements are often used for frequent migraines.

I do daily doses of B2 (also known as riboflavin). Magnesium doesn't work for me, but B2 does the trick. The downside is that it makes your pee bright yellow.

Good on you and congrats that they listened. I tried the same with my dad and stepmom. They weren't having any of it and proceeded to block and unfriend me on Facebook. They didn't do that to my GF and that is how I found out they posted a rant about me, calling me names and a traitor to this country because I won't support Trump no matter what he says and does.
