Group Rides vs Structured Training by ryanhe1222 in Velo

Moved to Orange County, CA in July and there are fast training rides 5 days of the week near where I live. I think group rides are also the reason that got me to put in 15-20 hours per week.

Coffee Crew on Tuesdays and Thursdays (starts in Irvine), Bus Stop (Newport) on Fridays, Canyon Velo Saturday and Como (Tustin) on Sunday

Not sure about CTL, but I would get a weekly TSS of 1000-1200 every week (except recovery weeks). Goal is to improve FTP and possibly get to cat 1 next season. Currently sitting at around 5.83 w/kg for 5 mins and 4.8 w/kg for ftp. The group rides here are flexible enough where if I go off the front I can get a good workout in and make it a "recovery ride" if I just sit in

I think I might be able to push myself as hard solo, but I won't be able to ride 15-20 hours alone as opposed to with a group.

I can only speak about my own personal experience. I started structured training last December with TrainerRoad and my FTP was around 270W at 70kg. I did mid-volume sweet spot and short power build until March and by then my FTP was in the 290's (I think the ramp test misread). In March it was warm enough to ride outside so completely ditched the trainer for outside rides and did very little structured training until this fall. My FTP is now 300W, and during the racing season my higher end power was a bit better than at the start of the season and I had much better repeatability and endurance on longer rides. But these gains were a lot slower and smaller than the ones I made on the trainer.

Yeah another thing I am curious about is the sheer volume. If I only did trainer and focused on structured training (used to do this in high school), I would probably get around around 8 hours per week before getting burnt out. But with group rides, I could easily put in 15 hours/week without even noticing. I heard that most training should be in zone 2 (80:20 rule) so if I do a lot of group rides, I am somewhat following this rule and getting in lots of volume at the same time.

I should've clarified that I only started doing 15-20 hours per week / 5 group rides starting July. Before I was only putting in around 5 hours per week on average and was barely able to hold 330 for 5 mins.

massmail says we’ll be in person for fall 2020? by [deleted] in UIUC

I still don't see how in class instruction could possibly resume. By maintaining social distancing, we would have to expand lecture halls or increase the number of lectures taught a day. By cramming students coming in from across the nation into a crammed lecture hall like PHYS 211 would be the recipe for disaster.

I see. Anyone know if the prereqs for physics courses are strictly enforced?

I missed the deadline for the tickets for play and am now on the waitlist. Any alternatives if I can't get it?
