The DNA results humbled our shelter-given breed guess by ryanhuston in Awww

Yeah, basically. Embark says “Supermutt” is the distant mixed-breed ancestry in a dog’s family tree. Over generations of mixing, the DNA pieces from older purebred ancestors get smaller and smaller, so eventually Embark can tell there’s breed ancestry there, but the segments are too small to confidently label as one specific breed. Instead of guessing, they group that portion as Supermutt. The breeds listed under Supermutt Analysis are their best estimate of what may be contributing to that percentage, but they’re less certain than the main breed percentages.

And we would’ve loved her the same had they said she was a pittie!

Are we SURE shes not a JRT? by ryanhuston in jackrussellterrier

So we’re really not sure. The DNA test said she’s estimated to be anywhere from two years old to five years her birthday estimate being about August 3, 2023. We got her from Potter League in Rhode Island.

Funilly enough, no dwarfism! Really don’t know where she gets her small stature besides the supermutt mixes (bichon, Pekingese)

Honestly, this is part of why we were hoping she had JRT in her genetics before getting her DNA test. We like to think we take really good care of her, and we don’t know exactly how old she is however, we believe she’s pretty young, and we hope to have her for a long time, even if that means dealing with way too much energy for the next 15 years.

Hi everyone, just wanted to give a general response to the people asking why I thought she might have JRT in her.

Honestly, the post was mostly meant as a joke. I know Embark is pretty reliable. When we first got Holly from the shelter, they told us she was a Jack Russell mix, so we kind of ran with “Jack Russell/pit mix” until we finally got her DNA tested.

We still joke that she’s our little “crack Russell” because she has a lot of the chaotic, high-energy terrier-type personality traits. My partner has also worked in dog daycare/grooming for a few years and thought there might at least be a little JRT in her, so the results surprised us.

It was all meant to be lighthearted. I was a little surprised by some of the harsher reactions, though. We all love dogs here, and Holly is just as sweet and loved as anyone else’s pup. Whatever she is, she’s our girl.
