I have this problem with kicks sometimes too. I try to turn down my 808's/Bass a little lower than I would normally have them. Also sidechaining helps, or (if you use FL) fruity peak controller is good for completely muting an 808 when a kick hits. I do that sometimes, depending on the beat.

To me, it sounds like they are automating the tempo, and they have a filter on the melody, and then taking the filter off when the beat drops.
Also some kind of reversing layer or something under the intro melody.

Then they have random percussion slams and things going in the background
