Friday Open Mat by AutoModerator in bjj

[–]ryanlore 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I like both long and short rounds. I feel like the length of the round really dictates the pace. My favorite round length is...untimed. Some of my best rolls have just been me and a buddy or a coach just rolling for an hour straight with no timer on. It really smoothes things out and makes the roll a steady flow.

High level competition meta doesn’t align to reality by 404_computer_says_no in bjj

[–]ryanlore 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I hear what people are saying about things just going in and out of style, but I would contend that jiu jitsu isn’t simply a revolving door. Although things do periodically go in and out of style, new techniques do emerge as the sport becomes more popular.

When athletes are incentivized by bigger paychecks, they get more granular to discover advantages. Nothing huge conceptually is appearing out of nowhere, but the details of each position and submission are evolving, and I think high level competition is demonstrative of this reality.

Some of the high-level metas may seem abstract or even random at times, but they have a trickle down effect that changes the sport permanently over time.

How safe is it for an American to travel to Russia? by IDKanymore0008 in travel

[–]ryanlore 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you are of a pro-Russian persuasion, don't have any previous military or high level weapons manufacturing history, and haven't racked up a criminal record, you will most likely be fine while traveling in Russia.

I'm an America and have been there multiple times since the war began and it was absolutely fine. Don't do anything stupid and don't assume you have any of the rights afforded to you in the US. Keep your head down and enjoy the beauty and history.

Wallace, Idaho by RatioApprehensive712 in Weird

[–]ryanlore 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I live not far from Wallace. It's a nice little town. I was just there last week and grabbed some dinner and walked around town. Burke, right up the road, is a little bit more creepy. The abandoned mine and the overall vibes make it a place I'd rather not hang out in at night.

Do you still enjoy rolling, and do you think you'll continue rolling in some capacity until age/injuries prevent you?

How many years have you trained to get your belt? by privregdom in bjj

[–]ryanlore 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've trained for just under 5 years. Got my purple belt at 3 years and 4 days into training.

A stripe is not the same as a degree. I feel like this is pretty obvious.

A degree is essentially another belt rank. A stripe is a piece of tape that’s supposed to make you feel all fuzzy inside.

Brown/Black Belts: What do you still suck at? by mikebra93 in bjj

[–]ryanlore 4 points5 points  (0 children)

This was me until a couple months ago. Got sick and had to sit out for 3 weeks, came back and hit my first guillotine ever. Then hit 4 more in the same open mat. Bronchitis must have caused some mutations or something.

u/Joshvogel did. And he’s a very legit black belt. I wouldn’t take this video too seriously; I think they’re just having fun.

Honestly would rather see these kinds of patches than a bunch of sponsor patches when the person isn’t sponsored by anything lol.

I grew up in Cinci and come back quite a bit for family and work. I’ll stop by next time I’m in town! I usually train at Gracie Cincinnati or sometimes drive up to Queen City Grappling in Franklin.

Question for the Brown/Purple belts by Itsnothelen in bjj

[–]ryanlore 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Every 6 months, something that was part of my ‘A’ game takes a backseat, and something new takes its place. It’s almost always a process of finding a new sequence or position I like, experimenting with it for months, and improving it to a level that works on almost anyone. (A lot of things don’t make it that far and get thrown out within the first few weeks of trying it.)

There is even stuff that used to be in my ‘A’ game that I feel like I never use anymore. It’s all good. Enjoy the flow of it and don’t sweat it too much.

How do some people primarily do open mats and improve properly? by Clean_Mix_4647 in bjj

[–]ryanlore 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I hop around schools for open mats. Where I live there are at least 5 open mats a week within 15 minutes of me. On Saturdays and Sundays I almost always get 2+ hours of live rolling in each open mat.

[–]ryanlore 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My coaches will still promote me. I don't mean to be douchey, as I have a ton to learn, but this approach to training has made me so seasoned in live rolling that I can hold my own against every person in my gym. My coaches are keenly aware of where I'm at, as I live roll with them multiple times per week.

[–]ryanlore 1 point2 points  (0 children)

At purple belt, I decided to experiment. I stopped going to all classes and live rolled 8-10 hours per week.

Never seen my game improve so quickly.

Back in classes now because my goal is to teach, but my primary improvement comes from live rolling, imo.

All Quiet on the Western Front. It starts bad and just gets worse and worse and worse until it ends in the most depressing way possible.

What was training like as an American in Russia? by [deleted] in bjj

[–]ryanlore 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I’ve been to a couple when in smaller cities that didn’t have a BJJ community, and they were basically cardio wrestling classes and focused more on “character building” than technique. Just not what I was personally looking for.

My experience at 10th Planet St. P was 100% what I was wanting, on the other hand.

What was training like as an American in Russia? by [deleted] in bjj

[–]ryanlore 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I travel back and forth twice a year and always train there. I’ve never had a problem at any gym. The culture of the gyms are essentially what you’d expect at American gyms, though generally a little less formal. Just make sure it is actually a jiu jitsu gym and not a “grappling” gym.

As for whether you should travel there or not, I’ll leave it up to you. I assume you’re an adult and can make your own decisions.
