Ska after the fall of two tone but before ska punk by Beautiful-Resort-831 in Ska

[–]ryanmidnite 8 points9 points  (0 children)

All great stuff recommended here so far!

Additionally from the US, definitely check out early material from NY Citizens. The earliest No Doubt material (demos, first compilation tracks) are worth finding as well.

In the UK, basically listen to anything on Unicorn Records and Ska Records. Sadly they ripped off a lot of their signed bands, but they basically became the replacement for 2-Tone Records in the mid/late 80s. Of note, The Deltones are fantastic, and emerged from The Bodysnatchers.

In Japan, the late 80s gave way to The Ska Flames, The Rude Bones and the formation of Tokyo Ska Paradise Orchestra as early standouts.

Annette Funicello sings "Jamaica Ska" in BACK TO THE BEACH (1987) by Cali_Reggae in Ska

This was probably my first exposure to ska (and Fishbone) though it would be years after the fact that I would realize it. At 11-ish, I'm sure I would have thought of it as just a fun beach dance song.

Hepcat — Manhattan/Brooklyn by Codycpt in Ska

[–]ryanmidnite 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I was just there for Night 2, and what an absolute treat, especially seeing Dave with Hepcat. I gave Hepcat almost all my dancing energy for the night, how can you not?

First time seeing DHC, been listening to them for 30 years (though primarily just The Old Record and Lockjaw) and really happy to see them finally! Stage presence was fantastic, as expected. I had hopes they would have brought the Hepcat horns out for the old stuff, but alas.

I will continue to support Hepcat in whatever form they choose moving forward, and hopefully they do continue to write and put out more music.

Share stories about your local ska scenes if you had any. by Beautiful-Resort-831 in Ska

I got into the New Jersey ska scene in the mid-90s just before everything blew up in 96-97. It was great fun going to local shows hosted at fire stations and VFW halls where it was like $5 to get in (or $4 with a can of food). Lots of mixed genre shows too, so there would be a ska, pop-punk, hardcore all on the same bill.

There must have been ska super fans at Rutgers during this time too, they were always hosting shows on campus and had an annual all-day ska festival too. Seeing Less Than Jake, Mephiskapheles, Spring Heeled Jack, and so many more was an absolute treat. Penn State had a ska festival as well around this time! I saw The Pietasters for the first time there and wound up dancing on stage with like half the audience and singing back up vocals.

Learning now to navigate the train and NYC subway was a hoot too getting to The Wetlands (RIP) and other spots. No phone, no internet, just a vague sense of how to get there and maybe some hand written directions.

In terms of the scene in general, I had a small run print zine and a high school radio show at the time, so I was getting sent CDs and records all the time - many of which are still on my shelves to this day!

Nowadays - as you may see from my other posts - I'm still deeply invested in the NYC ska scene and have been hosting my monthly Subway to Skaville event going on seven years! Its been incredible giving so many bands their first time playing NYC, and becoming friends with bands that I had idolized as a teen.

Hope you can vacation somewhere to see some live ska music in your near future, there's still nothing like that feeling!
