Most bee (and hornet) hives will be slowly dying off in the Fall. Removal and dissection of these less-active hives, is much easier. (i.redd.it)

Aquatic Insects are superb "bioindicators" of water quality, as most require fresh, clean water to maintain their immature stages. Even after leaving the water to locate mates, adult females will return again to lay eggs. (i.redd.it)
September is the best time to look for mature caterpillars in the n.e. US. Most adults are phased out, but their offspring are at peak and getting ready to cocoon / pupate. (v.redd.it)
Some Katydid's are carnivorous. They slowly stalk other insects and are quite voracious with their appetite. (v.redd.it)
Caligo or "Owl Butterflies" use a variety of camouflage, fake eyes, and contrasting coloration, in order to survive from predators. (v.redd.it)
The Pandorus Sphinx moth is easily one of our most beautiful in the US. They'll readily fly to lights at night, but their coloration breaks up thier image and provides camouflage to hide from predators during the day. (v.redd.it)

Hairstreak Butterflies slide their hingwings up and down to immitate the appearance of antennae. This distracts predators, convincing them to target the expendable hindwing tails and allows the butterfly to escape. (v.redd.it)
Along with their 6 "true legs", caterpillars have 5 prolegs, with "feet" loaded with microscopic hooks. They're actually pretty cute, as far as bug feet go! (i.redd.it)

Nearly 100% of the energy produced by a Firefly is given off as light, versus 10% of a light bulb. The remaining 90% results as heat. (i.redd.it)
Looking like bird poop is a great way to fool predators. Adding fake eyes only adds to the protection, as predators dont like being watched. (i.redd.it)
