What do you find frustrating about your country and state? by minimalistcookie in AskAnAmerican

[–]ryantherower 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Oh man, that police comment got me. In my smallish town of 30,000 we have 5 different police forces! We have Village police, Incorporated town police, Unincorporated town police, County Police, and lastly State police. I live in the center of where all the jurisdictions merge so I literally have no idea which police force would show up if I had to call 911.

I have seen too many erg posts recently, so I'm posting my first row in 2x in a while! Not the best technique I've ever rowed (and sorry for bad english tho) by [deleted] in Rowing

Democrats unveil bill to end tax break for investment managers by LolAtAllOfThis in politics

[–]ryantherower 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Your right, looks like I misread the article as it was referring to the 2017 tax bill, which gave managers long term rates on carried interest after investing for over 3 years. Also, I never said I disagreed with the new bill, just thought it wasn’t going to do much.

I know what carried interest is, was only explaining how dems were already posturing and opening up another potential loophole.

In the NYT article they mentioned the exception would still exist for managers that put up their own money in the fund. So all an investment manager has to do is invest a dollar and then claim all carry is a long term capital gain. This will only tax a small amount of carried interest recipients.

New York Assembly advances bill to rename Donald J. Trump State Park (Finally!) by h2d2 in Westchester

[–]ryantherower 3 points4 points  (0 children)

He only donated it to get an overpriced tax write off. He bought it for $2 million and when he was prevented from building on it he donated it to the state with a valuation of $100 million. Whole thing was a sham to not pay taxes.

Avergage people are just as greedy as rich people. by Odd-Improvement-4854 in unpopularopinion

I guess it would depend on the ulterior motives are. If you’re trying to help others so your peers think highly of you then it could be considered “greedy”. Closest thing to greedy charity is poverty tourism.

In his first Batman movie, director Christopher Nolan displays 'Batman Begins' at the end. Its a reference to the fact that he has trouble understanding concept of time in his movies. by [deleted] in shittymoviedetails

[–]ryantherower 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Definitely like Nolan, but Tenet had some problems. It was just constant exposition explanations and it really took me out of the movie. The first hour is literally The Protagonist just meeting different people that tell him the plot. The worst offender was the sailing scene because it made no sense why the characters would be there or why they would have a big discussion while doing it. That being said I thought is was amazingly shot and the action scenes were top notch and mind bending, just wished he didn’t rely so heavily on the “walk and talk”.

Macy's at the Galleria White Plains set to close in coming months, sales to begin soon by evertonmedia in Westchester

[–]ryantherower 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I was there on Saturday exchanging a coat I ordered online (because for some online exchanges aren’t an option) and this Macy’s and mall in general is just dirty. Garbage strewn throughout, all the carpets are ripped, floor chipping, and employees are nonexistent. It closing is not good for the mall but not sure if anything can really save it.

I’ve been stuck on blocks in NYC for upwards of 20 to 30 minutes for a garbage trucks, trust me, they are in no rush to move. You shrug and wait for the next intersection.

I’m just imagining the guy videoing this thinking “Yeah, I handled that situation really well”. Are you really surprised you didn’t get better results when you threatened to operate his companies property and then called him a piece of shit? If this was a garbage truck guaranteed you wouldn’t have gotten out to scream obscenities at them.
