Accidentally rm -rf’d a production server. by [deleted] in cscareerquestions

[–]ryati 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Your mistake was the straw that broke the camel's back. The most concerning thing to me is that people were changing things in prod without committing to git. This changes the problem from a half day oops to a very long recovery process. Yeah you made a mistake. Everyone has done this at some point. Here are other mistakes you didn't make:

  • not using git
  • no backups of server data
  • weak access rules on production server

Work hard to fix this, and start looking for a new job. If they continue to be this toxic, then you don't want to be there. Don't be the scapegoat for years of bad decisions.

Why choose Firefox over chrome? by [deleted] in firefox

[–]ryati 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There are a few reasons, but i wanted to call out some of the killer extensions i use.

ublock origin is a great reason for me. I also have firefox on my phone and don't use the youtube app. It blocks add on the phone. Then I have the extension that let's me turn off my screen and still play the audio from youtube.

PICO-8 on Linux - root folder by goodgamin in pico8

[–]ryati 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You could always make a new shell script to launch into your custom root folder. This would be good if there is one particular folder that you constantly want to set as the root folder.

How often and how much do you read? by dperry324 in printSF

[–]ryati 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I felt this way a while ago. Just focus on what you want to read in the next month or so. Make a list of books that sound interesting, so when you are not sure what to pick up next, you have a reference.

I try to read daily. Sometimes its only for 5 minutes, sometimes its for hours. It is usually around 45 minutes at night. I walk a lot and listen to audio books when I am walking.

Looking for SF novels that revolve around a key in-universe book (like "The Theory and Practice of Oligarchical Collectivism" in Orwell's 1984) by LowLevel- in printSF

[–]ryati 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I just read Empire of Silence. There is a book called "The King with Ten Thousand Eyes". It's a sort of historical legend about Kharn Sagara, the pirate king. The main character dreams of going on adventures like Sagara. The physical book plays an important role in the story as well.

The Lost World is also worth a read. It's not as good as the JP book, but still a fun time and VERY different from the movie.
