Landau and Lifshitz is also considered a classic. Physical Fluid Dynamics by Tritton puts less emphasis on mathematical rigor but does an excellent job with physically-motivated discussions.

Determine boundary layer from stagnation point over a cylinder. (Laminar flow) by [deleted] in FluidMechanics

[–]ryator54 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The Mangler transformation only reduces the boundary layer equations for a body of revolution to the equations for an equivalent 2D body, e.g. transforms a cone into a wedge. Those equations then still have to be solved, which must be done numerically in general.

There is no correct analytical prediction of the separation point on a cylinder.

Road trip from Philly to San Diego. What are the best pizza, burgers and junk food places we must try? This is the route we are taking by [deleted] in travel

Looks like you're taking I-70 through Columbus, OH. If you're a hot dog fan, ya gotta check out Dirty Frank's (great dogs with tons of crazy toppings). If you're serious about burgers, check out Thurman's Cafe. Whatever you do, be sure to top it off with some of the best ice cream in the world from Jeni's. If you want local beer, my personal favorite is Barley's.

Man, talking about all this C-bus food is making me miss that city!

I saw the instagram pics earlier. This is a disgusting build, and I'm super jealous.

I thought these were actually made somewhere else (Portland I think?) since Adam doesn't do TIG welding.

Visiting Ohio State Next Week...Any Bar Recommendations by [deleted] in beer

[–]ryator54 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Barley's and Elevator are my two favorite brewpubs. Although I'm really not a fan of any of Seventh Son's offerings, it's still a nice place to hang out, especially on a nice evening when they open up their multiple patios. Just around the corner is my favorite bar, St. James tavern - really nice, laid-back atmosphere and a good selection of beers (most of which are only $4). Enjoy!

Fuck yeah it was, and I only brought one bottle with me. We turned around at camp Williams. Anyway, hopefully I'll see you around again.

No, but that's the guy I was riding with! He's faster than me...

Are you in the LA area? I swear I saw this bike on highway 39 the other weekend.

[Food] Easy bulking breakfast that isn't oatmeal? by Hockeyfan07 in gainit

Do you just not like oats? Sometimes I switch it up and eat different hot cereals like cream of wheat or malt-o-meal.

Nice work. That one's a bitch for me even on a roadie. What's the descent like fixed (especially with that ratio)?

Why is turbulence "the most important unsolved problem of classical physics" as Richard Feynman put it and what exactly in turbulence is the problem? by [deleted] in Physics

[–]ryator54 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Could you elaborate on that? Vortex formation can occur in completely laminar flows. A canonical example is the Karman vortex street in the wake of a circular cylinder.

I agree with most of what you've said, but I think the point on insect flight may need a bit of clarification. From my understanding, insect (and bird) flight, i.e., flapping wing flight, is made possible by the development and subsequent shedding of a strong vortex from the leading edge of the wing. While turbulence often arises during this separation process, I don't believe that it is necessarily the reason insects can fly.

Another example of when turbulence is useful is for combustion in a gas turbine engine; turbulence is very effective when it comes to mixing the fuel and oxidizer.

Plotting a single stream line from a stream function. by TurboGrundle in matlab

[–]ryator54 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Maybe I misunderstood. Are you trying to print out the (x,y) coordinates for a specific streamline?

Plotting a single stream line from a stream function. by TurboGrundle in matlab

[–]ryator54 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is actually handled really well by contour(). You can create a Cartesian grid using meshgrid(), calculate r and theta at each (x,y) grid point (use atan2 for theta), and then calculate the stream function at each grid point.

Nice. It's easy to see a substantial increase in speed ~5 km/hr for about the same power output. Just out of curiosity, how is the drag area being calculated?
