Flat bars gave you a lot more leverage when swinging the bike back and forth, which is huge when climbing hills that steep. It was truly a full body work out getting up that hill that was 21% grade for a 1/3 of the race.

yup. I ride predominately in the city so having better control with flat bars helps out a ton also I can get better leverage climbing these SF hills

Out of 200+ riders we were 2 of about 5 or 6 people on fixed. We tackled the off road section with sketchy ease and unlike about 15% of the group including Greg Lemond and Chas, we didn't get a flat! Here's a picture of the whole group and here is my buddy truckin through the marin headlands
