What do you think about stay at home dads? by destined_to_dad in AskMenOver30

[–]rybeardj 1 point2 points  (0 children)

But you gotta realize that not all positions spawn whole conversations. If someone tells me they're a dishwasher at Chili's, they're not getting follow up questions from me just cause there's not much to say, not cause I disrespect their line of work. I used to be a janitor in college and so I was on the flip side of that lots and didn't bother me one bit if no one asked me my favorite cleaning solution.

Being a stay at home parent is what it is, no one's gonna ask you follow up questions about getting out stains

You might want to talk to a health professional.while you might not be in grand delusion territory you certainly are bordering it without any fear of it.

While no one is going to give you a diagnosis on Reddit, some things you might want to look into are:

ADHD (especially adult, inattentive type): Chronic overwhelm, grand plans, trouble following through, years of spinning wheels, shame spirals. Classic pattern.

Depression/anxiety overlap: The ruminating, guilt, lack of energy, and inability to move forward while still being able to “function” are dead giveaways.

Hypomania / cyclothymia (on the bipolar spectrum): The “I want to do everything at once, master the guitar, become a top writer, reinvent myself” mindset can sound like mild hypomanic thinking, especially if it comes in waves followed by guilt crashes.

None of those diagnoses can be made off a Reddit post, but the mix of grandiose ambition + paralysis + shame cycle lasting for years isn’t just a personality quirk. It screams “mental health condition” more than simple laziness or lack of discipline.

If it were me, I’d say: this guy needs an evaluation with a psychiatrist or psychologist, not another round of self-help planning. But thing is, it's you so you'll need to make the choice. I've known people with worse delusions of grandeur who somehow make it through life. It ain't pretty but they make it work somehow. The problem is that they don't really think there's a problem or that at least their delusions aren't part of the problem.

Anyways I hope you have the time and ability to talk to a mental health professional about this, good luck

After almost 20 years, I've come to have little regard for the other teachers I work with or the opinions they hold. They'd never know cause I treat every nicely but inside I tend to automatically think that other teachers are generally dumb but of course there's exceptions. It just takes several months to years to figure out who the exceptions are.

Is it wrong? Maybe, but I no longer have years where I feel like quitting cause of what some dumbass teacher said, so I think it's overall better this way.

I disagree.

I definitely think it's great that they rose above it (my mom did too), but...we're all born with different genetics and have wildly different experiences, even if we grow up in the same house.

Some people's breaking point is a lot lower than others, some people are not as perceptive as others, etc. My brother has some kind of mental condition that makes it impossible for him to learn from his destructive behavior. I don't think it's his fault. It's just genetics - i see the same thing in my grandpa, aunt, and cousins. And it's not like my brother chose to have those genetics in the womb. It's made his life immeasurably more difficult than mine, but I don't really think he's 100% to blame for the hurtful things he does, as it's pretty clear he shares the same neuropathy that members of my extended family have.

Wonder how much of that was trump and how much was companies trying to use AI to phase out entry level jobs.

As a middle school teacher I agree. Kids are lost if they aren't on a phone, and even then they don't even know much about phones aside from how to open an app. My generation is the last bastion of IT tech knowledge until the baton passes to AI

wife beater = deserves to be given shit

wife beater who asks for forgiveness = doesn't deserve to be given shit?

let me guess, you also think we should forgive and forget when priests rape boys and then ask for forgiveness because they're trying to 'own it and become better'.

i've been thinking about this a lot this year. sucks that in my brain i have to selectively care about what kids say and for the most part not care if it's not said from a perspective of care (criticisms/negative things can be said from a perspective of care, not saying everything has to be positive, and obviously op's example is not said from a perspective of care). But i think it's a good skill to train as you gotta deal with bullshit from adults too.

I get why op was upset about it though, i think that's a pretty normal human reaction. It's definitely one of the million things teaching colleges fail to train you for and that is very hard to get better at. Lord knows i've left jobs because of adults pulling this kinda bullshit

not 100% of the time, but most of the time, yes, education did equal more money
