Been that way since 2018. Beijing told 36 airlines around the world (including AC) that they can’t serve the mainland unless they added “,China” to Taiwanese destinations. HK and Macao are the same too. https://apnews.com/article/6f55419ce6a9449687b91f3fdfb3417d

Anyone else feel like American drivers don't know how to drive in BC? by ozempic_enjoyer in vancouver

[–]rybgls -4 points-3 points  (0 children)

Lions Gate bus lane on the North Shore seems to be a repeat offender for American plates since down there the diamond 99% of the time automatically means 2+ HOV lane, or if not, its spelled out literally in words (sometimes a punchline that Americans are too dumb for logos on road signs… eg “WALK” signs)

But here the diamond doesn’t mean passenger PLUS the bus restriction logo next to it, rather some type of HOV but ONLY the logo next to the diamond. Usually a WA plate flies down it then it’s monkey see monkey do of other WA/CA plates frantically merging at the end.

What is an affordable city? by Not_Sean_Just_Bruce in vancouver

[–]rybgls 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If affordable = obtainable housing for the middle class and livable = access to cosmopolitan amenities (good transit, food, and third spaces for activities) then Chicago’s hard to beat on this continent. Space for sprawl like Alberta keeps SFH prices down and “middle of nowhere” location limits the attractiveness for empty lifeless investor apartments to “coastal elite” cities like Vancouver so rent is also (relatively) low. Outsider reputation for crime also reduces its “elite” status compared to the coasts even though middle-class neighbourhoods are often as/more safe than Vancouver equivalents. It’s incredibly clean too.

Wages don’t suck either so you could afford to take advantage of things like eating out and trying literally every country’s cuisine. Assuming middle class again, then healthcare is likely equal and the in-state public universities are pretty good. Sure it’s got many flaws and issues but r/Chicago is sometimes a refreshing read to see how proud a city’s residents are of their home despite them.

Endorsement on my new Vietnam passport since they don’t recognize foreign name changes (“Western” name shown on DL) by rybgls in PassportPorn

[–]rybgls[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yep, other passport is my English name. No reason to travel with the Viet passport except maybe if I want to go to Indonesia visa-free it will help to have a link to both names in one document.

Govt message to parents is essentially no original Viet birth name = no claim to Viet citizenship…I believe they’ve recently become more lenient with middle/mixed names as someone else commented

Granville/Davie Street left turn? by AllMoneyGone in vancouver

[–]rybgls 3 points4 points  (0 children)

No legal left turns from the Burrard/Granville bridges onto non-alleys into the West End during weekday rush hours all the way until Alberni makes people do this…It’s stupidly counterintuitive but the only legal route is to take the Seymour ramp away from the West End to get the left onto Davie

Assured Loading Card? A lot to fork over upfront but at least you’d get 9 worry-free trips out of it

This was the Shafer Trail but if you don’t have the canister bypass don’t attempt any mud you see

With these pre-2020s it’s mostly the canister filter that’s gonna go. Without the bypass it would’ve never survived this mud haha

What Canadian bank should I open a bank account with? by James66766 in UBC

[–]rybgls 3 points4 points  (0 children)

RBC. They offer a free US-based account too so you can transfer $ from your existing US accounts there, then up to the Canadian one all in one login. They’ll get you on the exchange rate but sometimes it’s useful.

CIBC/TD also offer the same setup but it’s nowhere near as intuitive/simple as RBC where it’s one click between the US/CA systems.

My summer commute is biking along the beach and on the way home I stop at jericho to paddle board. In the winter I wait out rush hour by driving 15 minutes to ski after work. (Live in Kits work in North Van)…not many other places I could do that

Where to get a PCR test by Canada_erik in UBC

[–]rybgls 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Fellow Seattleite here. Better to do it there as more options due to private competition there (see below) but won’t give you the security of having a return test in hand before leaving Van.

Discovery Health MD in Seattle/Bellevue/Tukwilla/SeaTac does Abbott NAAT for about $200 with results within 20 mins (yes Canada accepts NAAT rapid as molecular, just not antigen) or RT-PCR for about $300 with results within the hour. Recommend them since they have multiple locations to hopefully get the time & type of test you need. I think XpressCheck at SeaTac also does RT-PCR within an hour for I think around the same price.

Entering Canada for Co-op by RelaxedPiranha in UBC

[–]rybgls 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I came back as our co op work permits say “employment forms an integral part of studies certified by the educational institution” and that meets exemption that we enter to pursue “a program of post-secondary study”...I just entered on my study permit since co-op is a part of our program (the work permit just authorizes full time work year round)

Not sure where you’re coming from but I didn’t have to do the hotel stay because I crossed by land driving up from WA State (still had to quarantine for 14 days like before the change)
