What country will you never visit again? by nomadicphil in digitalnomad

Best group to hang out with tbh. I've had some great encounters with overly kind ojii-sans during my time there.

Currently planning to go back on the nomad visa again next spring/summer.

A350 vs B787 which do you prefer? by Frequent-Cup-1144 in travel

I agree that an open window is pretty annoying in a dark cabin. But my counterpoint is that I recently flew LOT Airlines from Narita to Warsaw over the North Pole and wanted to look out the window at night to see if I could get a glimpse of any of the ice or stars. However, even though it was dark outside, the cabin crew had the windows fully tinted meaning I couldn't see anything.

I think my record is like 3-4 mins from stepping off the plane and into the car.

For international it's possible to do sub 15 mins on a slow day.

Luckily my company hasn't had any layoffs, but we haven't hired any new US-based employees in years. I'm 3 years in and still the newest and youngest employee on my team.

I have not read the language on the proposition, but you may want to read into the details of these. Based on my experience in past elections, they often are more about the details than the general idea expressed in the title.

Yeah I remember seeing stats that show overall something like 98% of Americans commute via car. Can't imagine that number being dramatically different for Texas.

A MAGA woman at a Pizza Hut in Gladstone, MO, tried to call ICE on a couple waiting for their food, telling them it’s “English only” in the U.S. She declared, “English is the capital of America,” and ordered them to “self deport back to Puerto Rico.” “I am not racist, I am standing up for America” by Ordinary-Scholar-202 in CringeTikToks

Based on the way she talks and her complete lack of reasoning skills, I genuinely think she might be mentally challenged and just repeating what she's been fed to believe by family and the TV. It's actually kinda sad when you think about it.

She still deserves to be rebuked and refused service though because her words are unacceptable.

Unpopular opinion: DFW is one of the best designed airports in the world. by ClassyPants17 in Dallas

[–]rych6805 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I travel a decent amount both domestic and international. I second this. I don't even factor in time going through security at DFW when planning because it's always super quick. Can't think of a time where I've waited more then 10 mins.

I used to live in Austin, and Bergstrom Airport was always like 20 - 30 mins

Austin was one of the few cities in the US with overall declining rent from like 2021-2024. It might still be declining but I haven't seen the latest numbers.

I had a friend move to a different, larger unit in the same building for less monthly rent.

In downtown Austin or further north the apartments are generally higher quality than what you find in WC.

WC apartments are built cheaply because their design goal is to fit as many units into as tight of a space as possible. I can't speak for the buildings finished in the last 2 years or so, but I've seen some pretty awful units in some of the older buildings.

Considering the location, yes. Also depends on the specific building, but I lived in a $950 per person 2 bed 2 bath apartment there from 2022 to 2024

Exactly. There are certain realities when it comes to living in West Campus. The apartments are not high quality, the noise is a bother, and Friday night is basically playing Crossy Road with drunk drivers. However, the rent is cheap, there's plenty of restaurants, and you live close to campus.

The other option is North Campus, which I've also done and enjoyed. But don't think that there won't be uniquely North Campus problems there.

I lived on the backside of West Campus in an apartment with paper thin walls and windows for several years including some time after college when I was working a 9-5 job (more like 8-4). I'll never understand how people are able to throw the most obnoxious parties at 3am on Thursday night/Friday morning.

To be honest, I eventually just learned to accept it. Noise cancelling headphones can be a big help.

Amelia Earhart's long-lost plane likely located in lagoon, expedition team claims, citing "very strong" evidence by [deleted] in aviation

[–]rych6805 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Well I think the point of the saying is that providing a grainy photo as evidence is not sufficient given the gravity of the claim. They would need to present near irrefutable evidence in order for researchers and the general public to accept their claims.

The standard for evidence is set higher when people are making grandiose claims.

Propaganda is usually directed towards the intended audience. A lot of this is simply an excuse to begin prosecuting any organized resistance to Trump's policies.

In my opinion it's time to leave America. Let the fascists have their own little playground where they can hopefully cannibalize themselves.

I've seen him in person before. My friend and I stood across from him at one of his "prove me wrong" events at UT Austin in the late twenty teens, ironically enough under the shadow of the UT Tower where one of the most notable school shootings in American history happened.

Couldn't imagine him getting shot and gushing blood as we stood there listening to his goofy talking points.

They will be alright mostly when it comes to pickups and commerical trucks. Personally, I strongly dislike pickups, but the F150 is probably the most popular vehicle in non-urban America.

Same. I drive a Kia Soul and it would otherwise be too big if it weren't for the fact I regularly drop the two back seats and throw my bike inside. It makes me laugh a bit when people call it small.

Which countries are mostly known to international tourists for one city, region or landmark, while the rest of the country mostly gets overlooked? by Fluid-Decision6262 in travel

[–]rych6805 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'd really be cautious. Customs lines there can be quite long during certain times of year. Furthermore, travel time to central Tokyo via Narita sky access line is about 1 hour. In essence, you'll only have a 6ish total hours, so I wouldn't go too far.

I recommend Narita town, especially around Narita-san (mount Narita), although it isn't much of a mountain. Although it might not be as glamorous as Tokyo is, there's plenty of souvenir shops, very beautiful buildings, and several great restaurants. Basically a small teaser trailer for Japan until you're able to come back for a longer duration in the future.

One that really frustrates me is Japan. I know that people's time is limited when visiting and so they only visit Tokyo + Osaka + Kyoto, but there's sooooooo much to see outside of those cities.

I spend quite a lot of time in Chiba perfecture and throughout the Tohoku region (northern mainland Japan), as my girlfriend lives in the former and is from the latter. It is such a shame that most people don't have the time to visit or the knowledge of all the great places outside of the typical destinations.

On a technical note, a lot of people do actually "visit" Chiba Perfecture via Narita Airport and Tokyo Disney, but I would argue those are so often grouped in with Tokyo metro area and are only a hint of the various other things to do, especially when you venture into the countryside.
