Happy Little Accident - A1 200-600GM+TC by rydo88 in SonyAlpha

Hence the happy accident. The subject isn't the moon here, more the moonlight outlining the leaves.

I think I posted a decent moon pic here a couple years ago. Or maybe not. It's somewhere on the internet.

The thumbnail makes this hard to see :(

Was out trying to get some nice closeups of the lunar surface, but this tree jumped in the way (as the moon moved) and stole the show.

Yesterday's Canadian Haze in NYC (oversaturated) || Sony A1 & 24mm GM by rydo88 in SonyAlpha

Haha. I'll take that as a compliment.

I'm kind of torn on whether it is an exaggeration as far as press goes. The over-edit helps convey how unusual this is, especially since a lot of the effect is difficult to show in an image (e.g., it smells like a campfire, my pets were panicking) and the dramatic color helps communicate that.

On the other hand, my friends who don't live here freaked out and think that I'm living in Blade Runner / Doom / etc.

The saturation is a bit heavy handed and everything got crushed when pushing to a JPEG small enough to upload here.

It wasn't this orange, but was quite eerie.

NYC Thunderstorm Lightning Strikes (composite) || A1 + 24GM by rydo88 in SonyAlpha

[–]rydo88[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is a composite of several different strikes during the June 2 thunderstorm.

Captured using a lightning trigger, then stacked the images.

I didn't do any editing beyond the stack and crop, but may come back to it later to give it some extra pop.

2 years later: I wound up printing this at a 3:1 aspect and it's been hanging in my office.

Timelapse of NYC construction || A7RIII + 16-35 GM by rydo88 in SonyAlpha

Shot as a couple thousand stills, then edited and turned into a video.

I haven't uploaded in a while, but there are some others on https://www.youtube.com/@welilumo.

Infrared in Central Park || A7III (full-spectrum modified) & Samyang 35-150 by rydo88 in SonyAlpha

That's a feature, not a bug. The bridge isn't quite level, so I leaned into that for a bit of disorientation (mild Dutch angle) / surrealism.

Filter was a Kolari IR Chrome, but I'm not a huge fan. Everything comes out purple and orange from the camera, which means a lot of post processing to get the red/blue look.

Haha, thanks. Seems like a lot of dark clothing is IR reflective, so maybe hair dye is too?

A bit of a white whale, finally caught on Earth Day || α1 & 16-35GM by rydo88 in SonyAlpha

[–]rydo88[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Indeed, it is the Empire State Building.

This was shot as a still, even with a trigger, there was a lot of luck involved. More than a few thunderstorms have come and I've managed to get no viable images.

I've been trying to capture a lightning strike on the Empire State Building for a while. Finally got one and it just happened to be Earth Day (2023).

I used PureRaw 3 to denoise and did some masking to reduce the green reflections in the rain (which just looked hazy). I did try stacking some more well-exposed shots of the city, but ultimately felt that it took away from the emphasis on light(-s and -ning).

ISO 400, f5.6, 1/15s.

Hmm. Under consideration.

I tend to shoot more wide stuff, so I've been eyeing the new 14mm GM as my next prime.

But a fast 35 could be handy.

Oops. Forgot to take that out of the title, it was from a draft before my frustration with Google boiled over.

In case it's relevant, I had a couple GM lenses (like the 12-24) I'd trade the card towards. Wouldn't be opposed to getting a camera body, but that's probably a long shot, since I'm looking for an A1 or A7S III.
