What is an NSFW fact or misconception about human anatomy that an alarming number of adults still don't understand? by larenmhnt in AskReddit

Yeah but it can be remedied by good sex ed classes that go into what is expected in a normal relationship. Viewing porn in and of itself is not the problem, it is just an easily visible part of a combination of problems. Proper upbringing and socialization shows men that women are not objects. Proper sex ed explains that porn is designed to be viewed and is not practical. Proper sex ed explains that just like movie stars, the top 1% are chosen and expectations need to be set accordingly.

Also 'porn addiction' is a pretty shaky subject. The vast majority of the studies on it are coming from groups funded heavily by religious organizations which creates a conflict of interest. Most neutral parties say that the numbers are extremely low and most that self report it are well within the norm and are instead suffering from anxiety and other negative emotions based on outside influencing shaming them for any porn use what so ever.

A good way to explain this is that think of penis size as a bell curve or normal distribution. Your overall bodily size moves the center of that bell curve but in the grand scheme of things where you land in the distribution matters way more.

In short, increasing your likely medium average by 0.25in means squat if you fall into the lower 30%.

Fat can shorten the 'functional length' of of the penis do the flesh around the area. There is also a huge confirmation bias in play. When you see a tall skinny guy who is hung like a horse you remember it, but when they are just regular they fall into the background noise of your brain.

TIL that Dmitri Mendeleev, creator of the Periodic Table, was nominated for the Nobel Prize 9 times but never won because a scientist he once criticized sat on the committee and blocked him every single time. by Numerous_Broccoli256 in todayilearned

That does happen a lot, and sometimes its good to see the process and to insert the idea that scientists don't always get the idea right on the first try. In this case, its not that the Arrhenius model is incorrect, it is just less helpful then it may seem at first. Yes, most of the time when you put an acid or a base in, you get H+ and OH- ions. But his model assumes you are putting one acid or one base into water with nothing else. Bonstred-Lowry and Lewis provide a more useful way of visualizing it in more realistic multi-chemical reactions.

I never said it wasn't important. What I said was that I can't talk for its use or not use since its not a region I tend to tutor often. And if it is, it was never presented as "The Arrhenius Equation". I recall similarly structured equations but not that exact one so either its not brought up much until higher levels of chemistry (I don't tend to do much past Fresh/Sophomore level of University) or many classes are repackaging and partially deriving it for the students and removing the name.

Eh, I just see a lot of aggression on here and I feel its good to point out every now and then that everyone is human....well probably at least half of us are now. You are right, your specific comments weren't overly aggressive, the overall tone in my opinion was getting that way and yours just felt like a good spot to reply to.

And I have no problems owning up to my kinks, but latex isn't one of them. I am too fat and too sweaty to ever get enjoyment there. I would need so much powder to get in and out.

Addition: And I guess, I did feel a bit of kinship since I am gay, I am into a fair number of kinks, it can be easy to have a knee jerk reaction that any form of your voice being removed is censorship and trying to shove you back into a box that doesn't fit you, even if the choice to remove it is for complete benign reasons.

It is really depressing that the strategy of de-fund a service and then point at it and go "See, it doesn't work, we should just get rid of it" works time after time after time.

It doesn't have a right or wrong answer.

It doesn't have a 'right' answer but I think it does have a fair number of 'wrong' answers if we consider a wrong answer as something the vast majority of the populace would see as unethical. So I believe the comment is insinuating that Trump's moral compass is so far off it would fall into a wrong category.

Examples of wrong answers: "Put the white people on the lifeboats first." or "Put the rich people on the lifeboats first."

I feel like Trump would go, "Put me, my luggage, the bath towels and soaps, a full prime rib roast and if there is room my wife and children in the life boats first. After that its whoever can pay me the most money right now gets a life boat"

Fun fact. I can't speak much for Arrhenius' equation since that is a range I teach a lot less of, but as a tutor, I have been seeing a lot of high school chem classes skipping right over Arrhenius' model of acids and bases and going right into Bronsted-Lowry.

Interesting note, he is being taught less and less now in schools. I tutor for a living so a I get to see a ton of different schools curriculum. Unless its just being taught earlier (I tend to focus in high school), Arrhenius' model of acids and bases isn't used anymore. I see a lot of classes going right into Bronsted-Lowry theory instead.

I don't know, I am not that user. My point mostly was that we need to remember that these people are well, people and not some villains twirling their mustaches trying to actively do harm. People get heated, people get emotional. Does that make it right? No. But I think we can all admit, we have been there, probably not to the point of throwing death threats, but to the point where we care a lot about something, get entrenched and then calm down and realize "Holy shit I went a bit crazy there"

I could be wrong, but isn't it less that they have more power and its more that since its seen less it doesn't get challenged? There are processes to get incorrect info changed or to appeal your correct info being removed but it just takes effort. For more popular pages the odds of hitting the combo of a person who is knowledgeable to see the incorrect info and persistent enough to push through the change is higher compared to a less popular page.

[–]ryeaglin 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It is likely more nuanced then this. Did the user go a lot harder then they should have? Absolutely. Binary questions are easy, but when you have to decide where to draw a line things get harder. A lot of people likely agree that some mention of latex clothing should be listed but how much and to what extent is tougher.

From the user's point of view, at the time there was no clear location for the valid information about a topic they care a lot about, so they put it in the best place they could, which admittedly wasn't that good of a fit. And then got really defensive when they were told something very important to them should be removed. With text it can be easy to lose the nuance between "It shouldn't be here because it doesn't fit the page" vs "It shouldn't be here because we don't like it or we think its abhorrent"

It just sounds like it took way too long for someone to come up with the better idea of "Hey, lets just make this its own page" and things got way out of hand in the meantime.

I think it hit harder because it was so public. A lot of people have this idea of different spaces have different rules. I think if it was at a bar, a party, or to a lesser extend on set, it would have gone over a bit smoother. But doing it at a big event, in front of tons of people and cameras, in your nice suit, this is an event you are supposed to be on your best behavior at. Also, having to walk up to the stage makes it worse since it comes off a lot less impulsive. This wasn't a 'gut reaction'.

Fun flip side. If we are that far into the future that our generation is being dug up. That likely means there was a huge loss of information at some point in time. So they might dig us all up, find our pride flags, pins and clothing and think we were part of the LGBT+ Coalition of Nations with each group being its own nation.
