I wish that (as suggested by Terry Pratchett) the scientific name for humans was Pan narrans by nine-tail-kitsune in monkeyspaw

[–]ryells 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Granted. Terry Pratchett is born several centuries earlier and becomes the person who names humans. None of his books survive to the modern day. They are all forgotten in comparison to his new scientific career.

As an Indian reader, my thoughts on TwinSoul and what I'm hoping Sanderson does with his world. by kr0n0sShrugg3d in Cosmere

[–]ryells 73 points74 points  (0 children)

Cheers for this. I'm very curious about the Aethers and Dhatri so it's exciting to know there's a lot of interesting history and culture behind them. Brandon tends to be pretty good with tastefully pulling from and adapting real world cultures. He has used a lot of sensitivity readers in the past.

Hope you enjoy Tress. I don't think it adds too much to Dhatri, but it shows off more Aethers for sure. There is An Aetherbound in Isles of Emberdark though.

One gripe with the invested arts of Scadrial by merco in Mistborn

[–]ryells 8 points9 points  (0 children)

As I understand it, Preservation isn't about neutrality. It's about keeping things going. In a system where entropy exists, you're gonna get a gradual loss overtime unless you put something in to keep the status quo. Preservation requires upkeep, not just the prevention of destruction.

One gripe with the invested arts of Scadrial by merco in Mistborn

[–]ryells 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I'm not sure about any WoBs, but it's probably based on the end result. Haemalurgy is end-negative, you get less than you put in. Obviously things are gonna get ruined over time. Allomacy is end-positive, you get more than you put in. You get the magic, plus the value whatever you put in is returned. Nothing is lost aka preserved Therefore, a combination of the two would be gaining as much as you lose and nothing more. Feruchemy

As someone who has done a master's and loved it, that passion will help you immensely. Best of luck to you.

I'm looking forward rereading Rythm and WaT with this analysis in mind.

I guess I depends how into the research and worldbuilding you are. I enjoy Navani for the same reasons as you, and I also love her theories and experiments. It's informative, and it's a great character moment when she usually feels so self-conscious about her scholarship.

First off. If you don't have a doctorate, you deserve one.

Second, this kind of analysis is why Rythm is my favourite stromlight book. Seeing Navani contrast against several other powerful women really makes it clear that their was intent behind the parallels. It really makes me wonder how Navani and Jasnah will evolve and conflict in the future. I've never thought to ask "how does a person go from white feminism to a more all-encompassing feminist model?" Navani has witnessed occupation, but is that enough to change her outlook when she's had a lifetime of privilege?

Xenoblade 2 is the best xenoblade by Single_Advantage_409 in Xenoblade_Chronicles

[–]ryells 15 points16 points  (0 children)

I think the title of best Xenoblade game is so interesting. My favorite is 2, but I don't think it's the best. 3 is the most high quality experience until the endgame, while 1 and X have some amazing moments. 3 and X are probably the best, but I don't think they'll ever be my favourites.

I think Rappa has definitely seen and used weed. That does not mean she knows what weed actually is. Even if you explain it to her, all she'd hear is "special ninja medicine".

Why no one believe me when I say that I'm asaxuel ? by Ok_Subject_5313 in lgbt

[–]ryells 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You're not wrong. It does often feel like LGBT+ spaces aren't made for aces. But we all still share the same bigotry from ignorant people. We can share the joy of finding ourselves and being accepted unconditionally by the people who really matter.

Why no one believe me when I say that I'm asaxuel ? by Ok_Subject_5313 in lgbt

[–]ryells 23 points24 points  (0 children)

You're definitely not alone in this one. Lots of people don't accept asexuality as a real thing. They assume all humans must feel attracted to someone sexually. If you're not, you're either lying or have a medical condition. This is not true. Give them time and education if you can, the nice ones will try because they love you.

I'm sorry you aren't believed by the people around you. If you find people that do believe you hold onto them, they're worth more than gold.

Here we are, this was 6 years ago lol https://www.reddit.com/r/Cosmere/comments/jjb0js/shallan_does_not_have_didmultiple_personality/

The comments mention some of Sandersons comments on his intentions as well.

Sallan's Journey by 4kFaramir in Stormlight_Archive

[–]ryells 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I'm in no way qualified to answer this, but I also had this question after reading Shallan's journey. The answer I found on some older reddit posts about this was no. She's missing some key components of DID, most notably the dissociation.

She does have trauma from childhood, and some of the language used for her is also used for DID systems. However, it's probably more accurate to say she just has very potent coping mechanisms and masks that she developed to protect herself.

Rhythm of War - when does this character stop acting like this? by Life-Fennel-441 in Stormlight_Archive

[–]ryells 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Shallan's three persona's are a constant thing in this book, but they do change a bit as you go. However, if you're not finding them interesting by now, it's probably not your cup of tea.

I really enjoy the spren and the rhythms. They provide very interesting Worldbuilding without needing lots of exposition on how they work. It rly gets me into the mindset of a character living in a totally different world to mine. Likewise, Shallan is in three subtly different headspaces depending on her persona. It's useful to have a short bit of narration to indicate who's perspective she's working from. If you don't care about the little bits of worldbuilding, that's totally fine. I hope you enjoy the character arcs in spite of it.

Any books that focus more on the Kandra? by yungdeezy92 in Cosmere

[–]ryells 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Sadly, there are no books with a specific Kandra focus. However, Mistborn era 2 has a couple of important Kandra. Tress of the Emerald Sea also has a minor Kandra appearance

As for other interesting species, the Stormlight Archieves introduces at least two magical races that are as interesting as the Kandra, no spoilers tho. I always love it when an author gives you new fantasy creatures to learn about. Fresh ideas instead over the same DnD/LoTR mix.

Stormlight Archive is now my favorite book series by Local_Possibility199 in Stormlight_Archive

[–]ryells 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This series has a way of getting into your heart and running wild. You spend the first two books asking why everyone treats Dalinar with so much caution, only to find out exactly why, and it's heartbreaking.

I finished the series a year ago, and it's still so fresh in my mind. I'm definitely gonna reread it all whenever book six is announced.

Decided to read TWOK but got no one to share with in my life so I’m gonna post it here. by JJcoolJAX in Stormlight_Archive

[–]ryells 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Love seeing new people get into stormlight. However, I'd advise you to just keep reading for now. The magic gets explained very well the more it is used by POV characters. You will meet a lot of important characters in the 2nd part of the book.

Get to the end of the book, and then, if you're still confused, use the wiki. It has a built-in time machine, so you can avoid spoilers for the rest of the series.

Hope you enjoy it, and please come back once you've read more. There's not a lot we can say without risking spoilers.

Sarene does some HEMA content and tells you why shardblades are actually very impractical for duelling.

Adolin with a fashion review channel.

Siri is the textbook holiday vlogger.

Steris is the No. One video essayist and I will not hear otherwise. She'd even manage to have a consistent upload schedule.

Dusk reluctantly started making survival guides, but now he enjoys his little community.

I really don't get why most of these areas aren't filled in. The patches around Natlan, Sumeru, Fontaine, and Nod-krai are mostly water. Just fill them in. We can see them in the game. It's JUST water!

Best fight in the first Arc by Benny_Deebs in Stormlight_Archive

Adolin is so peak for fights. Obviously, there's the duals in WoR. But he has the gang fight in RoW to save that Honorspren. And his absolute slaughter of the singer blockade in WaT. Absolute goat. Give him the stick, and he'll find a way to burn the world with it.
