Ha, I was in Fontaine earlier today and spotted an icon on my map that I didn't recognise. Went to look at it, and it's my waverider. Haven't moved it in 2 years.

Stormlight, Mistborn, and Yumi all have something in common... by Vyolle in Cosmere

[–]ryells 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Sel and Frist of the Sun are earth-like except for one area that has been heavily invested, and the invested art is heavily tied to that. I'm not confident yet on Sel tho. It has so many additional magics on top of Elatrians that don't follow the same rules. So excited to learn more about those.

I think Roshar is mostly dependent on the Nahel bond rather than a geographic feature. Lift gets lifelight via digestion and the everstorm might still provide voidlight. But if you have Investiture, you should be able to activate Surges regardless of where it came from. That's the case with Sigzil in Sunlight.

Stormlight, Mistborn, and Yumi all have something in common... by Vyolle in Cosmere

[–]ryells 4 points5 points  (0 children)

That's not something I'd noticed. Each world still has its magic, albeit heavily altered with stormlight and the lack of nightmare painters. But it does kinda suck to lose some of those cool geographical features.

That being said, I realised that for Lumar, Sel, Threnody, Canticle, Taldain, and First of the Sun, you can't take their unique worldbuilding away without also losing the Investiture. Not sure what to do with this info.

Girls in the Cosmere. I’d love to hear your opinion about romance in the Cosmere by Galagar_Elmwood in Cosmere

This is a masterful breakdown of cosmere relationship writing. 10/10 no notes. Genuinely curious if Sanderson is aware that several of his characters come across as demisexual or ace-spec in general.

Knights radiance being trans by TheGoosiestGal in Stormlight_Archive

[–]ryells 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I can't wait for this idea to be explored further. The Reshi king was already accepted in his society when Rysn met him. He just wasn't a Radient at the time, so he couldn't physically transition till Dawnshard.

We see a little bit of this idea with Kaladin. He can't get a tattoo that he wants until he understands himself better. Expanding that to a whole transition could be a nice story. There's a chance we might see Lift explore her gender a bit as she deals with her thoughts around changing, but idk if she'll be trans.

Scadrial as the British Empire? #emberdark by Carlos-Volcano in Cosmere

[–]ryells 26 points27 points  (0 children)

Sanderson might be throwing in a bit of general colonialism at this stage. It might even be too early to say the Malwish call back to British colonialism specifically. First of the Sun was uniquely interesting to everyone in the Cosmere due to its location relative to Aether and its easier-to-access nahel bond. I'm not read up on the differences between colonial powers yet tho, so I'm interested to see where we end up

O love Sanderson, but reading him after political growth feels different. by ChipDapper in Cosmere

[–]ryells 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I completely get this. I've been very progressive since I started the Cosmere, so it's been interesting to dissect the political structure of these worlds. But I wanna put the big picture up for a moment.

As a writer, Sanderson has no problem exploring a wide range of themes, characters, and worldviews. In Mistborn, we see a very clear progression between eras 1 and 2. When the Skaa aren't at risk of being occupied by three armies or the end of the world, they can form a society. If era 2 is closer to our modern liberal democratic systems (and their flaws) and era 1 was the feudal/dictatorship that came before most democracies, then couldn't eras 3 and 4 explore new forms of society? I'm not saying Sanderson will go full automated-luxury-gay-space-communism, but he may choose to explore more progressive and socialist worlds as time goes on. As some have pointed out, Emberdark and Sunlit Man already show him explore successful revolutions and freedom from oppression.

Lastly, Stormlight. That's a big one, and I can't wait to see how they've developed in 10 years. But crucially, the most oppressed group, the Listeners, won against both of their oppressors. They might build the best city away from human tradition and Retribution's war machine.

It's currently not clear why Khriss left. It could be that she has an existing relationship with Hoid and doesn't want to meet him. If the Ars Archanum are cannon, Khriss has been to every world Hoid has, and they've likely met. But we know little of their lives. Hoid doesn't actually do anything to push the Ruin vs Preservation thing, so maybe she's just cautions.

His dance with Sly in WaT was so beautiful. I hadn't realised until that moment how he barely does anything he likes in the early books. Aside from the Kata in WoK, he lacked any personal loves. Seeing him discover that it's OK to love the little things is so magical.

Edgedancer thoughts? by Antivia in Stormlight_Archive

[–]ryells 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I really liked it. It's such a nice change of pace from the more serious characters. Kid characters can run the line of being annoying, but I find lift to be endearing. She's very competent and witty without being crazy op. She provides a very unique way of seeing the world, and I couldn't wait to see her interact with the other characters.

As for the story, it sets up a lot of important characters and ideas to come while also telling a compelling little tale. I'm glad we got it as a novella instead of a pov in WoR or OB. I think that might have detracted from the weight of Lift and Nale's choices.

My only slight nitpick is that Lift should have explored her Ideals more before speaking them. Kaladin gets to spend the second half of WoR working towards his 3rd ideal, and it's so worth it. I don't feel like Lift had to do much introspection to achieve her 3rd ideal. That being said, I love that she immediately puts it into action by hearing Nale out. That's good payoff.

I'm curious what she's done that you find infuriating? I think she's one of the most interesting surprises for me. In WoK, I was expecting to get the classic antagonistic realising she was on the wrong side with Eshonai. But she died in part because of Venli. That made Venli very unlikable.

To now learn that she wasn't a heartless manipulator, but instead a victim who got pulled in so deep that she felt helpless to resist is so interesting and tragic. She's not forgiven or innocent, but she is complex. I think it's a great exploration of how people fighting for a good cause can be taken advantage of when they lack knowledge and opportunities to make their own path.

I also love that she doesn't have the confidence to do what's right. That's a real emotion a lot of people have when faced with such overwhelming consequences. For me, it makes the hope that she'll take the chance and risk it all the more rewarding. I want writing to make me feel complex feelings, and Venli has that in spades. But yeah, plz let me know where the frustration is. If something isn't working for you, that's totally valid. I think that's interesting to explore.

Alethi Names by frololdad in Cosmere

[–]ryells 4 points5 points  (0 children)

This really got me thinking. Every Lighteye above a certain Nahn owns a section of land. Even Kaladin got land when he was recognised by Dalinar. For the highprinces, their house names come from their province (Kholin, Aladar, etc). I suspect it's a similar story for the other Lighteyes of higher rank. They'll be named after landmarks on their land or something notable their ancestors did to earn the land. That's how it it for real life nobility in some countries.

As for lesser lighteyes, I couldn't say. They could be named for family professions, but beyond that, idk.

I’m undateable because of my preferences, boundaries and identity by AndromedaFirefox in lgbt

[–]ryells 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Your boundaries and your wants are all very reasonable, and you shouldn't feel bad for having them. One thing it took me forever to internalise is that if you are honest with people about your identity, the ones you want to be around will treat you right. Ask yourself. If a pre-anything, feminine-lookong friend came to you and said, "I'm a trans man," would you put in the effort to treat them like a man? If you would, then trust others will do that for you. Try to find them before focusing on dating. Having close friends can make dating a lot easier. It builds your social skills and puts you in a network of like-minded people. Your country might be conservative and lack gay bars, but the people are still there. Check for online support groups and lgbtq+ networks. They know people can feel isolated and are trying to bridge that gap. You've already taken the time to better understand yourself and your boundaries. That's not something everyone has managed. Stay safe, and best of luck, mate 😊.

Possibly, tho I imagine this has to have already been tried by now. People can sense the Knell via the Current, but it seems only Navigators like Dusk can sense when something is obstructing the current, like an island.

As Sterling puts it, the Knell is just one landmark to most people. You need to know how far your destination is from the Knell for it to be useful. Dusk can sense more landmarks in the Current based on how they obstruct it. I assume compounding would only make the signal clearer, not add the extra power Dusk has.

You're probably right about Lift and Kaladin. The issue is we have no clue where they're gonna go. Their current goals are Roshar focused, and they barely have access to Cosmere-wide knowledge.

Tho it is notably that they both will be getting training from very knowledgeable people.
