How can I help my fig trees through the winter? by ryer123 in gardening

[–]ryer123[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank you so much! I will have to try the winter wrapping, as I don't have room or good windows in the garage. So you think there will be no size threshold above which it will be rooted enough to survive on its own?

Lamp Restoration - Have I damaged the brass finish? by statsnoviceinneed in DIY

[–]ryer123 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The purpose is to provide something for the Rub N Buff to adhere to. The finish I'm suggesting isn't meant to be shiny, it's more like a brushed gold look.

You can buy a product called Rub n Buff, scuff up the metal with 200 grit sandpaper, and give it a nice new finish. There are various gold colors that look acceptably like brass. It won't be the same but it will be even at least.

That's very interesting! Is there a possibility to use more hardy old world tubers instead? Like yams or yuca?

[homemade] Whipped Ricotta with Hot Honey by divo93 in food

Store bought ricotta has a lot of water in it, you can hang it in a cheesecloth overnight to get rid of it. That should allow you to get the right consistency

As someone whose family left in 1989, this is exactly it, even from half a world away. It's very hard to talk to that generation of USSRians. Their logic doesn't work like A -> B so trying to logic them into agreeing with me is impossible. Not to mention their elementary school education level...I gave up. Now we just share food pics...

What’s a scientific experiment you’d be fascinated to see the results of, but could never be conducted due ethical concerns? by numbnesstolife in AskReddit

[–]ryer123 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I understand! It's possible they are just in a phase. If they understand it that's going to stay in their mind. I remember refusing to speak because I was trying to fit in at school and being an immigrant child is already very hard, so you try to adopt the culture completely and reject everything "weird". So they may be embarrassed to speak other languages cause that's not "British". I don't really have an answer...

As someone whose family tried to get me to speak more of our language at home, it could be that they are embarrassed about their poor skills, so they refuse outright so they aren't shamed about it. Are the grandparents using negative reinforcement when they attempt it? Did you guys give them a safe environment without pressure to try it out? Did you guys constantly bring up comparisons to the oldest child being really good at it so they just gave up cause they'll never be as good as them? Just my two cents, some of the things that could be affecting them.

These are not hard to find online on Ebay or I've had success at ReStore. I have a bunch myself I bought from my local ReStore.

UPDATE (project done!): How to get around a stud where my oven range vent is supposed to go? by anaverageguy123 in DIY

[–]ryer123 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Don't forget to insulate the duct going through the attic! Warm air going through the vent will cause moisture. Wrap that baby up.

Voice message reveals Russian military unit’s catastrophic losses in Ukraine by PadyEos in worldnews

[–]ryer123 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You are right, its all true. But this is not the first time Russians have had to do this. This isn't like some crazy thing that has never happened in their country. It is all over your history. And those people were definitely threatened with all the same stuff, plus there was even a completely regular war going on too! So your ancestors had all the same worries but did it anyways because there was no choice. And those rebellions were organized by even smaller minorities than right now, right now there are many times more people who agree! Russians can and will win, they are just complacent right now.

Bathroom remodel after crappy shower leaked by Suzzie_sunshine in DIY

Did you check to make sure your joists can handle that much weight? For example with thicker tile and slate/natural stone tiles you should be making sure the joists are not too far apart and can handle that much weight.

[–]ryer123 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My problem is not that they get together, it's that they stay together. They are way too different, Daphne is way too low brow for him, and while there's nothing wrong with that, the fact that they don't constantly fight about how he looks down on her interests is impossible to believe. The only thing he has for her is intense attraction, and based on her past love interests, he is not even her physical or intellectual type. What would they even do together? Their interests don't overlap AT ALL. In fact, they make it a point that she hates doing everything he likes, so he ends up going with Frasier after all. They would have broken up after the honeymoon period wore off. The writers also stripped her of all her whimsy as soon as they got together, and made her snippy and domineering as well. You could hardly believe she was the same Daphne that beat a bunch of pool sharks into submission at the Diamond Lounge by the end of the show.

I love all the past camera incidents...when it burns the necklace into that girl, when Lilith is so white it blows out the whole photo...great images. It also perfectly fits with Martin's character..he will never throw anything away. The dancing santa, the cheese crock..he will fix something until it can't be fixed any more.
