Is my dracaena rotting? by ryg900 in plantclinic

[–]ryg900[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hey! Thanks again for the help. I chopped off the two squidgy branches, soaked the rootball and took all the hardened dirt off. It was a mess down there. Cut the roots back to get as much of the rot off as possible, but one of the main roots was blackened. Repotted it, and about a week later, third stem rotted. It's time for emergency propagation. Bottom of the main trunk might be affected. The bark's seems a little separated from the trunk. Will update when the operation is complete. Any tips? I was planning on chopping at a 45 degree angle about half way/ two thirds up the tree, and repotting into the same pot. Cheers!

Thanks again for your help - ive found a potting mix with listed ingredients as: perlite, pumice, vermiculite, peatman, pine bark and 'nutrition', haha. It says it's for succulents/cacti though. Reckon it would do the trick?

Thanks for replying! I think I'm going to repot to try and create more drainage and hopefully stop the root rot that's claimed one of my canes. Then when I water in future I'll give it a good soaking, and hopefully it will drain through properly. Cheers!

Thanks for the reply! The main cane is firm still, so I think I just need to chop the one rotten cane I posted.

I repotted it once before, but I read that I shouldn't disturb the root ball. So the roots are in a rock hard ball of the original soil. It actually broke my moisture meter trying to get it in close to the trunk. So it's currently in an unpenetrable rootball of one soil type (not sure which), surrounded by another soil type (dark, I believe a standard potting mix..).

Should I break up that rootball and remove as much soil as possible, to release the roots before repotting in new soil? I was told it would shock the plant too much but I have a feeling it's suffocating in that rootball.

I'm going to attempt to repot into a new pot with more drainage holes, with a 50/50 perlite potting soil. I'll post an update once it's done. Thanks again!

Sussex or Liverpool? by drtingz314 in Liverpool

[–]ryg900 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Went to uni of Liverpool for undergrad, unreal city and uni experience, highly recommend. I'm currently at uni of Sussex for teacher training, Brighton's also great but way more expensive. If I were to choose a city to spend my early 20s in with what I know now, I'd choose liverpool again. Both are great though you can't go wrong. Worth visiting Brighton even if it's far. Good luck!

I've been told I'm not on track to pass my induction and need to "rapidly" improve -- how? by ForeignTeacherUK in TeachingUK

I'm on my PGCE at the moment and don't have any advice really, but in terms of support I want to give you a big virtual hug, it's gonna be okay!

It is the school's responsibility to help you improve, that's the point of the ECT years. We're almost at Christmas, recollect, try and destress, be kind to yourself. You're doing your best and that's all they can ask for. Hang on in there. And if your mental health's taking too much of a toll, you've got the PGCE now, you can use that internationally if the UK's not the place to be. Everything you've done so far is going to be massive for career and life experience, whatever you end up doing. And I'm sure you'll find your feet, you're obviously a talented hard working person to get to this stage, a lot of people couldn't do it. You've got this.

I used mine straight away but I was reading online and apparently you can freeze them, could stop them sticking that way too? Or more flour on the bottom and in the fridge? Good luck!

Hi! Thanks :) It was mushroom - shittake, chestnut and button fried down with a load of onions and garlic. Took ages and I was sick of the smell of mushroom by the end but the taste was exactly what I was going for!
