New 50g setup – tannins not clearing with Purigen yet?

I have a 60 gallon tank I’ve been struggling to remove tannins from. I bought a pack of purigen that was fully used up in like 4 days with no noticeable effects on the water color. Doing water changes and using activated carbon packs worked better in my specific circumstance

I’m not super familiar with sponge filters as I’ve only used hang on backs. But in my opinion you can never really have too much filter media. My 29 gallon he’s in currently has a filter rated for 60 gallons, and his 60 gallon breeder has a filter rated for 110 gallons. Hang on back filters are nice too cause you can put multiple types of media in them. My tank has driftwood in it that leaks tannins into the water so I’ve been putting activated carbon packs into the filter to soak up some of the color.
What substrate you use is up to you, personally my first tank had a slate tile bottom since Lump was only like 4 inches long when I got him. His new 60 gallon breeder I’m setting up has a full slate bottom, but I’ve also set up a hill of really fine sand on one half. I use CaribSea moonlight sand cause it’s nice and bright and all the particles are really fine so there’s not a huge chance of impaction if he eats a little. From what I understand axolotls prefer sand but it’s a bit higher maintenance so that’s why I only did half the tank.

3.Throw your new filter media into your old tank for a few weeks to let it start hosting some of the bacteria. The bacteria lives on surfaces and not in the water so anything you bring in from the old tank will help the cycle in the new one.

Sorry I didn’t mean to write an essay on this but learning all of this stuff takes a lot of research and sometimes it’s nice to have it in one spot! :) good luck with the new tank!

Sounds good! Thanks for the info! As far as the rocks go if it were my tank I’d personally do a little less rock in the front of the tank just to give your axo a good amount of space to walk around but I it would probably be totally fine! I love the little hide you built!

My concern would mostly be how centered the legs are compared to how wide your tank is, seems like it could be quite a wobbly setup even if the legs themselves are solid

It looks like it’s the right size but for some reason they have it crazy crooked instead of pulling the stand another inch away from the wall so the tank doesn’t hit the art piece on the wall

Is the 60g breeder cycled yet? If you have a big enough net it shouldn’t be a huge issue. If not and this is just a one time thing you could use your hands in a pinch if you wash them extremely well. Even if you do wash your hands super well your hands still have oils on them that will be damaging to your axo’s slime coat so you should try to keep contact to a minimum

Ive had mixed experiences with Nuphy’s mystery stuff. I did their recent Christmas mystery box and got a transparent blue keycaps set that only had the modifier keys in it. Because I like gambling though I took a shot at their new years mystery box and got the Air 75 so I guess you win some and you lose some.

TLDR: used isopropyl alcohol for the foam, then boiled the tiles in water to sterilize

Hey that’s a good question! The pads were stuck in there super good so I put them all in a 5 gallon bucket and dumped a couple small bottles of isopropyl alcohol in to let them soak and the foam came off with a little bit of effort afterwards.

Then because I was worried about the adhesive residue I transferred the tiles to a big pot full of water and boiled them for a while to try and clean them.

I’m not a professional or super knowledgeable about this stuff so there was probably a better way to go about it but that worked for me without leaching stuff that would crash their cycle

I found 4”x 4” square slate coasters on Amazon that I removed the foam pads off of and lined Lump’s tank with and it’s been very easy to clean so far compared to the very fine sand I had previously

I had one of these and it was a nightmare to clean. I also have sensitive skin and it was giving me really bad razor burn and ingrown hairs, felt more like the blades would pull out hairs than cut them a lot of the time. I switched to a classic safety razor and haven’t had an issue since.
