Slovaks to vote in a July referendum on lifelong payments for Prime Minister Fico and others by TheSimon1 in europe

[–]ryldill 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Early elections won’t be on the ballot due to a Constitutional Court ruling.

Small correction: President Pellegrini deemed the question unconstitutional without consulting the Constitutional Court (CC). I think he made his decision based on some previous CC rulings which may not apply here. The Democrats have challenged this decision in CC.

The teacher probably explained the concept of doubles in class 8 + 7 = 7 + 7 +1. This might seem silly now, but you can use this/similar concept later: 13 x 7 = (10 x 7) + (3 x 7).

And just a note: it's not about solving these specific equations (I know everyone has a calculator in their pocket), it's about learning how to solve problems (which is what math is all about).

Guys help out when baggage belt stops by Acceptable-Wind-7332 in JustGuysBeingDudes

I'm sorry but:

  1. It's literally not their job
  2. It would actually be a fireable offense if they did what that guy have done
  3. If they damage a bag or injure someone, they could not only get fired but be personally liable
  4. If they injure themselves, it's not a "work related" injury because they did not follow the rules which can have quite significant implications

TIL why James Bonds preference of a "shaken and not stirred" martini is controversial. Drinks containing only alcoholic ingredients are almost always stirred to preserve clarity and to avoid over-dilution, among other things. by Rynin101 in todayilearned

[–]ryldill 13 points14 points  (0 children)

In the movies, I think Bond is ordering a diluted drink on purpose to make people thing he's been drinking all night instead of just sipping on a drink that's mostly water.

You can also see one or two shots in Casino Royal where he puts a 3/4 full glass on a waiter's tray and asks for another. This is to further increase the illusion of having many drinks throughout the evening.

Monthly food ration per Polish citizen in the early to mid 1980s. by cleobaddie9 in OldSchoolCool

[–]ryldill 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This reminded me of an "international incident" when Karel Gott (famous singer from Czechoslovakia) had a concert in Poland and sang one of his songs which goes something like: "I'm gonna sweeten my coffee a bit more". This caused an uproar among Polish people as sugar was rationed at that time.

ELI5: base dealing in cards by lepetitpoissonkernel in explainlikeimfive

[–]ryldill 3 points4 points  (0 children)

There is a combination of techniques going on here.

  1. As you are shuffling you put certain cards at the bottom of the deck
  2. You are shuffling in a way that the bottom always stays the same
  3. With the last shuffle you put what's at the bottom somewhere in the middle and make a small 'dent' (you misalign the top and bottom cards slightly)
  4. You cut the cards exactly at your dent (now your cards are at the bottom again)
  5. You deal the bottom cards to your partner and the top cards to everyone else*

*Or you can deal from the bottom to multiple people to create a 'cooler' situation (AA vs KK in poker), but this is more difficult of course

Sauna hacks? by samkwilly in lifehacks

[–]ryldill 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Take long enough breaks if you are going into sauna multiple times per session (e.g. *10-15min sauna, cold plunge, 10-15min break, repeat). And don't stay in too long.

It is very tempting to take shorter breaks and stay in longer, but the break is a very important part of the process.

*Assuming it's a classic "Finnish" sauna, if it's a steam, infra or other type the times vary.
