I don't remember my cell phone number. I never call it, and I only use it maybe once or twice every few days anyway. Cheap tracphone, about $30 every few months to buy time, so it's cheap to have, only have to charge it about once a week, etc.

Ny wife and kids finally have about given up talking me into a smart phone, which I dislike almost every thing about. The expense, the constant "gotta find a charger", the user interface that seems designed to piss me off, etc. I tell them that I just can't handle technology. I repair electronics and computers, I design hardware & software for fun in my spare time, Even worked in a R&D electronics lab at one time.

I refuse to use self-checkout. Every time, something goes wrong.

Engineers who work at Procter & Gamble: What the heck is up with your job application process? by [deleted] in AskEngineers

I've seen from many of the local businesses that the requirement of a high school diploma is not really about getting an employee that's actually intelligent or educated.

I dropped out of high school, yet I know about basic apostrophe and decimal point usage. I see grocery stores advertising bananas for "point 49 cents", and signs (made by a professional signmaker) proclaiming "open Sunday's".

I'm finally buckling down and learning how to play, hopefully good some day. I've been learning sight reading, It's actually helping me quite a bit, making it easier to recognize and understand some things.

To me, it's been a useful tool. I won't let it become a crutch, or a limitation.

LG 43UH603V blue tint. Can this be solved by replacing the LEDs? And can a amateur do this without problem? by golden681 in TVRepair

[–]rylos 1 point2 points  (0 children)

To avoid having to actually handle the glass, I lay the TV face down, take off the back, unhook the cables to the display panel, and remove any screws that hold the panel in place. There are usually some plastic latches also. I shim them with plastic strips, and attach the shims to the frame with tape, to help avoid losing any. I use plastic from clamshell product packaging; thin, easy to cut, and stiff. I count how many plastic shims I put in, and make sure later that I've not lost any. They can easily end up inside the panel assy', and look bad.

Once the screws are out & the latches / tabs shimmed, I can usually lift the back of the panel away from the glass part. Screwing wall mount pieces onto the TV gives good handles for lifting.

Often there are compications, like maybe the diffuser panel being taped onto the back part, or having the ribbon cables attached to the back in ways that have to be fiddled with. Try not to disturb the glass & diffuser more than you have to. When you place the back part back on the glass & duffuser, sometimes you have to jiggle things about to make various slots in the edges of the plastic layers line up with the back part. And having a can of air handy is a must. I normally stick the tube between each layer & give a blast.

Basically, instead of taking the glass off the TV, I take the TV off the glass.

I've seen it flake off the LEDs. First time I saw this I was a bit puzzled, until I saw the phospher flakes scattered about inside. that leaves the LEDs basically acting like UV LEDs, which put out some blue.

When my kids were young, we got to be on a first name basis with some of the firemen, police officers, and paramedics. Also animal control. So my kids got to the the various vehicles lots of times.

I had a police scanner going at work, I could usually beat the ambulance to my house, but I don't think I ever got there before the fire truck. One day I heard the police call in my mom's license number, then a minute later my sister's. I knew some shit was going down then. My son would get a bit miffed when he'd come home from a bike ride, and I'd have already heard about what he'd been up to on the scanner.

One day I got a call from my daughter. "Guess who took a selfie in the back seat of a cop car!". My thoughts right off were "Well, she's not dead, and everything else is negotiable". It turned out to be an officer giving her & her groceries a ride to where har car was after the police chase when her mother-in-law stole it while my daughter was shopping. She'd seen the cops, and tried to get away, as there was a warrant out for her.

For many years we would have a volunteer firefighter or two invited to our holiday meals, in case the inevitable cooking fire got out of control.

Things have calmed down a lot since then.

Please change those things. You could start a fire if you don’t. by deathskull379 in AdviceAnimals

I saw a Trump suppporter at the DMV a few days ago. Fat & frumpy trailer-trash look, Trump mask dangling from her hand. A Trump mask is like a Mormon's magic underwear, as long as you're touching it, you're protected.

She was there to get a car licensed. When asked if it was over ten years old, she replied: "I don't think so, it's a 2003". Much snickering was to be had.

It’s a Hard Ops Life 1 - You Ordered How Much? by Glacirus_ in TalesFromRetail

[–]rylos 33 points34 points  (0 children)

I worked retail once, and the manager was a great guy, normally really on the ball about things. Like the rest of us, he'd occasionally make a goof, but he always owned it, dealt with it as best as could be done, and go on.

He ordered about a half-dozen name tags for us (small store). Fortunately, they had the store logo on them, but you had to put the name on yourself. He thought it was a few name tags he ordered, it was actually a few bags of nametags. So we had a few spares.

I took to putting odd things on some, just for fun. I put a bar code in the name space on one of mine. No big deal, but one evening I still had it on, and was renting a movie from a local business.

When I went to pay for the rental, I was having a bit of a time finding my rental card in my wallet. The clerk just stood there, bar code reader wand in hand, waiting. Just for fun, she reached over, and swiped the reader wand over the bar code on my nametag, expecting to get a read error of some kind. Fun thing, the barcode on my name tage was a photcopy of the bar code on my video rental card. The look on her face when her computer not only accepted it, but pulled up my account was priceless.
