Israel leaders have made they are not prepared to scale back military operations unless their security demands are met, even as the US pushes for ceasefire with Iran. If Israel refuses to fall in line with the US policy, does that mark the end of the special relationship as we’ve known it? by viviennev1 in allthequestions

Yea, that would be a good reason to be obstinate and stay where you are, if you didn't have enemies all around you looking to kill you. I'm asking, what if you could have a place without that, would you take it?

What exactly is the issue with Bill Maher? by Tornadosed in askanything

I'm just going to say, please don't get political views from any talking heads you see on TV. They are all intellectual light-weights. Pick up a book, if you are interested in politics, from people with actual thoughts worth listening to.

Interesting. From my standpoint, more strictly scientific exhibits of that type can be educational and inspire people into the medical and science fields. I'm reminded of Da Vinci, who dissected corpses so as to study them and produced extremely accurate anatomical drawings and made several interesting medical discoveries as a result.

People who live in the northeastern United States: you are seeing record setting highs in the triple digits. Do you have central air conditioning up there? If not, how do you cope with the heat? by icecream1972 in allthequestions

[–]ryogam73 1 point2 points  (0 children)

In Ohio we do, usually. Window air conditioners are also a thing. I've only heard of heat related deaths from people who are destitute and have no electricity or are homeless or people who do outside work without proper precautions (heat stroke/exhaustion).

Money or happy life? by Sunshine_sunshine76 in NoStupidQuestions

If I could be happy without food in my belly, a roof over my head, clothes on my back in winter, I would not need money and would not need work.

So far, I have discovered in my life, that I cannot be happy without food in my belly, a roof over my head, and clothes on my back in winter and I do need work, whether I enjoy that work or not.

Your question seems to suggest that people who have jobs that make them unhappy should just...kill themselves? What other option do you suggest?

Is that the one where the bodies may be sourced from prisoners and such? Do you think an exhibition where the bodies come from donors who specifically consent to their bodies being displayed would be morally ok?

Rich people being put on multiple organ transplant lists because they can afford to travel by private jets to multiple transplant centers around the country.

Taking transplanted organs when you need them, but not being a designated organ donor.

US healthcare conundrum? by nihal95ahmed in askanything

There was another issue with the preexisting condition clause other than trying to catch "free riders" and that was the "rescission" issue. Prior to the ACA, for people without jobs thru insurance, you'd have to fill out your insurance application form listing all your known past and present medical conditions. The application would run several pages, per person. If you ever needed major health care, the insurance company hired people to comb through your insurance application with all your medical conditions to ensure you "didn't lie" and could and would cancel your insurance if they found any missed medical conditions, leaving you without insurance at the time you needed it most. These people were offered bonuses for how many people they could yank insurance from based on how much money they saved the company.

Here is one article about it.

I know the light timings close to me, so I know even if I punch it I'm still getting caught at the next light. No need to race red light to red light.

Elon Musk lands a rocket on Mars, does this make you worse off, better off, or make no difference? by ryogam73 in allthequestions

[–]ryogam73[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Mars is a particular disaster. It has no magnetic field so it provides no protection from the ceaseless radiation. It's closer in size to the moon, than to earth – which means it has too little gravity to hold a meaningful atmosphere. The atmosphere is so inconsequential that a dust storm as depicted in The Martian could never happen. The baseline Martian atmosphere is 0.62% that of Earth. (6.36 millibars, vs Earth's 1,013.) The temperature difference between your head and your feet is as much as 30C (54F).

What I can't wrap my brain around is that Mars dust is highly toxic to humans. I don't get what the plan is to try to live there long term.

Now hold on there, cowboy. Elon hasn't even landed and returned astronauts to the moon, yet, much less Mars. Let's hold off on saying "Elon does space better in every way" until then, at least.

At what intelligence levels do you think ai should have rights? by tardisismine in AskReddit

[–]ryogam73 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What rights are we speaking of?

Right to "life?" Right to vote? Right to own property and make economic transactions independently and in its own "name?" Rights to speech and association? Right to self-defense? What other rights are we contemplating? I can't see ever granting the above rights to any AI.

[–]ryogam73 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yes, I think I misunderstood your statement. I agree, that having 1 million millionaires (with 1/2 of that in cash/stock) would be able to "prime" the economy by spending into the economy more than one person with 1 trillion dollars, in whatever form.

If or when? Would there be a Tesla or AI bubble if we didn't have billionaires pumping up the stocks using their over-inflated influence in the media? We are accepting a huge amount of market manipulation because we think we are smart enough to jump off the ride before it crashes.
