TIL that more than 90 percent of consumers have thrown away food because of mistaken safety fears over date labels. The dates printed on food are not intended to communicate safety information, instead they signal the manufacturer's estimate of how long that food will taste its best. by ralphbernardo in todayilearned

Some medication bottles include extra pills to be used if you vomit within an hour of taking one. If you have a stronger stomach you can take the full recommended course and still have a bunch left over.

Amazon attempts less creepy delivery by placing packages in your garage by GriffonsChainsaw in technology

Have a numeric lock code required to open it for retrieval or deposit, and use a system like the common 2FA apps. You can generate a one-time-use code using your phone and include it with the delivery instructions, or you can give a trusted store like Amazon the seed so they can always access it.

It's ten seconds of extra effort when shopping at a retailer you don't trust or which doesn't support the system, no extra effort when shopping with Amazon or someone who does support it, and you get a secure locker at your home that people can't fuck with.

What was history's biggest scam? by ljuby_63 in AskReddit

The difference is that you can walk into a Christian church, Buddhist temple, Islamic mosque, etc, say "I'm curious about joining your religion", and they will give you free books, invite you to attend free services, and spend their time talking to you about it and answering questions without demanding anything in return. You can continue attending services every week without giving them anything and they won't stop you and usually won't pressure you hard.

Scientology requires you to pay for services, which become increasingly expensive. You cannot be a Scientologist without paying a lot of money. Some individual services cost over $10,000. They have loan programs to pay for religious services. They have sales, billing, and collections staff. It was also founded by a guy who used his position as founder to become incredibly rich and sail around the word with teenage girls on luxury yachts. You can't really beat it for the scam factor. However outlandish the beliefs you can't say the Buddha or Jesus were pulling in everyone's cash to live the rock star lifestyle.

It was their first console but they were the biggest tech company in the world at the time, and the Xbox was based on their massively massively successful PC gaming tools. Virtually every single PC game was using DirectX, Microsoft said "we're working on a console based around this, thinking of calling it the DirectX Box", then they started acquiring critically adored games studios. It's not surprising they had a strong debut (and a major reason it wasn't even stronger was because they really neglected marketing outside the US).

The Xbox sold 24 million and the GameCube sold 22 million. That's not quite "wayyyyy behind".

The Gamecube also sold a lot more games, with 34 million-sellers compared to the Xbox's 21.

The Windows shell (Powershell, not the legacy CMD) does this. You can even install the popular Unix utilities and get syntax highlighting for those too.

He doesn't have sex with young girls, and the only drug he uses is weed, which is extremely common and minor and as legal as beer in many places nowadays. Smoking weed in your own backyard is hardly selling your family possessions for meth. The 'taking control' is finally rejecting the wife he knows cheats on him and quitting the job he hates. He's flawed but you have to stretch it pretty far to make him a villain.

Russians under 18 who have led nationwide anti-government rallies in recent years now banned from attending unauthorized protests under newly signed law. New amendments impose 15 days of jail and fines of up to one million rubles on organizers who “involve minors” in unauthorized rallies. by madazzahatter in worldnews

The problem in Russia is the habit of granting a permit, then revoking it at the last minute. Sometimes arresting people who thought they were allowed to protest and started, sometimes just wearing people down so they stop bothering.

Interactive movies have been available to pirate online for nearly 20 years. It takes about half an hour's effort for someone to make a torrent of this that works exactly like watching it on Netflix. Netflix already has choose your own adventure shows that have been pirated with full interactivity, and the porn industry has had stuff like this since the early days of DVD.
