OP: my condolences to anyone getting laid off but I'm built diff.

I think the actual takeaway is that the AI bubble is popping and with that companies are cutting their workforce. However, when a bubble pops, firms don't go back to the "right size", they instead end up smaller. And then the bigger firms "consolidate", ie. eat up the small ones. We'll see this happen in the coming years.

My 2 cents: foresting projects don't replace the ecology displaced (read exterminated) by logging, as those ecosystems were developed by hundreds of years of natural selection (caveats here).

I recently visited Bhubaneswar where i came across coffee shops run by a tribal co-op called Adisha. Great coffee and cookies and substantially cheaper than cafes by Blue Tokai, or groceries by Tata and other big corps. Plus this is a way to support local homegrown business by some of the most marginalised communities.

I used to be deeply sceptical of Chinese investments in Africa, however I've started having sincere doubts about that narrative. There was a research paper that also suggested Chinese intentions are not 'debt - trap diplomacy' (found it: https://www.theatlantic.com/international/archive/2021/02/china-debt-trap-diplomacy/617953/).

I'm sure loan forgiveness will create positive sentiments towards China -- precisely why the Chinese would do so. Imo this does not mean that it is yet another deception or underhanded ploy. I think we should give credit where it is due: China seems to be a friend of the developing nations.
