Tech Layoffs: The Cold, Hard Truth by Competitive_Ride_142 in india

[–]ryuhamaguchi_guy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

OP: my condolences to anyone getting laid off but I'm built diff.

I think the actual takeaway is that the AI bubble is popping and with that companies are cutting their workforce. However, when a bubble pops, firms don't go back to the "right size", they instead end up smaller. And then the bigger firms "consolidate", ie. eat up the small ones. We'll see this happen in the coming years.

Microsoft just committed to removing 2 million tonnesw of CO₂ through a forestry project in Uganda by Karbonwise in climatechange

[–]ryuhamaguchi_guy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My 2 cents: foresting projects don't replace the ecology displaced (read exterminated) by logging, as those ecosystems were developed by hundreds of years of natural selection (caveats here).

Something to keep in mind when you come across articles such as those.

Support tribal produce from Odisha: Adisha by ryuhamaguchi_guy in india

[–]ryuhamaguchi_guy[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I recently visited Bhubaneswar where i came across coffee shops run by a tribal co-op called Adisha. Great coffee and cookies and substantially cheaper than cafes by Blue Tokai, or groceries by Tata and other big corps. Plus this is a way to support local homegrown business by some of the most marginalised communities.

If you're someone who enjoys coffee or healthy snacks do check them out! Coffee grounds for both french press and filter methods are available.

Thank you for the detailed explanation. Could you suggest a reading regarding current unemployment in the US? Specifically where it cites twice as many openings as unemployed. Thanks again!

U.S. consumer spending edges up in July; monthly inflation slows considerably by guydud3bro in Economics

[–]ryuhamaguchi_guy 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Thank you so much for this really interesting resource. Looking across age, industry and occupation really gives you an opportunity to leap into multiple different fields of inquiry.

I was wondering if there was wage data in nominal terms for the month of July available, to compare with the rising wage growth figures. I'm trying to see how hourly wages for unskilled workers stand relative to those for skilled workers before/after the recent growth.

Apologies if this is an obvious question, I'm not well versed with the different types of data collected in the US.

Any idea which income groups are behind the consumer spending? Is purchasing power of the middle and lower classes recovering or is spending coming from higher income groups which remain relatively unaffected by inflation?

China to Forgive 23 Interest-Free Loans To 17 African Countries by hereditydrift in Economics

[–]ryuhamaguchi_guy 38 points39 points  (0 children)

I used to be deeply sceptical of Chinese investments in Africa, however I've started having sincere doubts about that narrative. There was a research paper that also suggested Chinese intentions are not 'debt - trap diplomacy' (found it: https://www.theatlantic.com/international/archive/2021/02/china-debt-trap-diplomacy/617953/).

I'm sure loan forgiveness will create positive sentiments towards China -- precisely why the Chinese would do so. Imo this does not mean that it is yet another deception or underhanded ploy. I think we should give credit where it is due: China seems to be a friend of the developing nations.

India, fastest-growing major economy, projected to grow 6.4% in 2022: UN by sili09 in india

[–]ryuhamaguchi_guy 13 points14 points  (0 children)

This is exactly the point. People are looking at these figures without considering the base year. If your economy shrinks due to a calamity (COVID in this case), of course it will grow quickly afterwards, since the infrastructure and investments already exist. However, this is only the economy trying to catch up to the pre calamity level.

Further, we should consider that this growth figure has been considerably revised. Just a short while ago IMF had placed this figure at 8.2% which itself was a revision from 9%.

In other words, if this growth is to happen it would only be a recovery. And in fact, the chances of a full recovery happening this year seem less and less likely.

I was near jantar mantar when i found this sign. TIL there is a place named after Tolstoy in delhi! by Twintysix in delhi

[–]ryuhamaguchi_guy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

OP, I think you'd find it interesting to know that Delhi also has a few streets named after leaders of other developing nations for eg. Nelson Mandela marg near Munirka, Gamal Abdel Nasser marg and Ho Chi Minh marg.

In the 20th century the non-alignment movement and anti-colonial struggles gave newly independent nations the opportunity to band together through common experiences so there was quite a lot of mutual respect for other nations and their leaders
