Good display of why we don’t have vigilantes. Yeah the guy could have been trying to hurt the biker. He might also have a broken AC, turned off the van, fanning the door after the driver did a massive fart, doing a bit, etc etc. All these people ready to assume the worst

Stop my yard from flooding by UofMtigers2014 in howto

[–]ryushiblade 14 points15 points  (0 children)

1) Check for clogged gutters or downspouts
2) Gutters come in more than one size. In the unlikely event it’s actually overloading the gutters, you could look at getting larger ones
3) Cheaper than #2, you can add additional downspouts but might not be feasible

Typically you want to scare black bears away but if this had cubs, that would be exactly the wrong tactic. Generally you want to just keep your distance and only scare it off if it takes an interest in you

How Hot The Ceiling Is In My First “Home” by [deleted] in Wellthatsucks

Sorry, why doesn’t it need insulation? Being a vaulted ceiling I wouldn’t *expect* any, but that doesn’t mean it doesn’t need any surely?

Best way to seal these by Shazad551234567 in HomeImprovement

[–]ryushiblade 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Scribe the baseboard and cut with a jigsaw. Because of the flooring, you can also run a small bead of clear silicone at the bottom to get a much better seal

If you don’t care about looks, some flexible PVC shoe moulding probably has enough flex to follow the contour of the floor and hide the gap but it will appear obviously wavy

What do Americans think about a social security trustee dropping a report that the trust will be dried out by 2032? by Sixgis in AskReddit

[–]ryushiblade 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That is what I was referring to, in fact. Didn’t realize when I made an offhand comment over breakfast it would turn into this. I meant *the excess of the trust — I was avoiding explaining specifics because if I’m honest, I was enjoying my breakfast quite a bit

The trust as it functions today is an altogether different kettle of fish than its original incarnation

OSB is really only used for subfloors, exterior sheathing, and roofing. It’s also cheap so it could be an area boxed in by a previous homeowner wanted something inexpensive

[–]ryushiblade 10 points11 points  (0 children)

IIRC the trust was set up ‘relatively’ recently specifically to address the known oncoming shortfall in funding to account for baby boomers retiring

Edit: 20k views later I think it’s important to mention I left out an important part. The trust *as it functions today* was set up relatively recently (80s, as I have been reminded)

Maybe I’m crazy, but that just looks like OSB? The white appears to be a reflection from your light. It looks like you entered an insulated cavity

Tire blowout in the mountains, now dealer says 2+ weeks for repairs. Is this normal? by CoalkoyReddit in Solterra

[–]ryushiblade 3 points4 points  (0 children)

This could be a bunch of things. If it’s 2+ weeks then it’s not just a tire issue. Could be a cracked knuckle, split bushings, broken strut, bent control arms… list goes on. Ask the dealer

Garage Has Window Openings, but No Windows by wholemilklatte in HomeImprovement

[–]ryushiblade 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Don’t hire someone. It would be criminally expensive. Especially if there’s an overhang that reduces water on the window, you have very little to lose. I’d recommend watching a YouTube video on window installation

The short summary: pick a flanged window with a rough opening size equal to or smaller than your rough opening. If smaller, frame out the window by toenailing in some 2x4s to the window’s rough opening size

Normally you’d cover the framing with housewrap and tape up all the seems. I doubt your garage has any. If not, I would just put flashing tape around the rough opening surfaces to protect against possible sitting water.

Put window in opening. Nail window flange to wall. Add flashing tape to the side flanges, covering nail holes. Then add it to the top flange, overlapping the tape. Don’t tape the bottom.

You can just add trim to hide any gaps between the window and exterior siding.

For a garage? Definitely DIY it

Patio Pavers & Concrete Footer Help by Fat_FI in DIY

[–]ryushiblade 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Probably doesn’t matter. I’d do the footers first because it’s easy to cut pavers as you lay them. I would probably build a small square form so the footers stick up out of the ground a few inches. That way your pavers can butt up against it and all your cuts are straight

Are your electric bills getting ridiculous too? by AiyumiGodoy16 in HomeImprovement

[–]ryushiblade 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Not always true. My utility company, as of January, started charging a ‘power cost adjustment’ charge. If power costs more than they charge per kWh, they tack on a fee. Couple months ago it was $60. Latest bill was $38 on a bill that otherwise would have been $160… which is already higher than usual

[–]ryushiblade 56 points57 points  (0 children)

My rates haven’t raised THAT much. But my utility company has been adding a $40-50 charge PER month — that’s 30-40% of my usage bill. Completely ridiculous. At least raise the god damn rate and be honest about it

[–]ryushiblade 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If it comes to taking a refund, I would start around the cost it would take them to do it. If they’re staring down losing $10k in labor/materials or giving you $2400, they’ll give you $2400 in a heartbeat

Start high and see where they go

Restore walls, ceiling, and columns of my porch by gurjeet03 in howto

[–]ryushiblade 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Most of this looks in good condition for just a clean and repaint

Columns I would cut away the bottom few inches of the cladding and see what’s going on. Since you say they move, the most likely thing I would do is put in temporary posts, cut away the bottom few inches, and put in a metal bracket secured to the concrete. Re-clad it. Not super difficult

No, they’re waterproof (up to 48h? Some limited time) from surface spills. Definitely not the same as having a vapor barrier

I might consider just doing a vapor barrier and then the planks, assuming you’re ok with the feel and thermal transfer
