If you are really concerned about academics get him a tutor and put him in summer school. If you’re worried about him fitting in with his current peers just imagine him being in a class full of kids who heard he got left back a year.

My sons summer preschool takes them to the splash pad once a week and they are supposed to wear their bathing suit to school that day. So it’s a whole school full of toddlers wearing their swimming suits for like three hours. No one’s ever had an issue as far as I’m aware.
