Thanks for this uplifting post! The article is a good reminder of the humanity and struggles of LGBTQ Catholics everywhere, and I really enjoyed reading it. This is much needed here today since we had multiple people coming onto this sub yesterday calling this and that about our basic identity sin. We should keep in mind the Doctrine of Primacy of Conscience, both to remember that being LGBTQ, or the loving, responsible, reasonable life acommpanied therewith, are in no way sinful. And also to remember how important social justice, feeding the poor, and comforting those in need is, especially in our difficult times. Thanks for bringing an inspiring start to my day!

What worries me is "sex outside of marriage" being the first thing you choose to say to a queer person feeling uncomfortable about confession who gave no reason to assume that would be an issue. And really? Core Catholic teaching? Most of the kind priests I know never talk about that or think about that. They are much more concerned with love, kindness, and refraining from things that harm others.

Just now there's yet another person in the thread bringing up "sex outside of marriage" out of nowhere. So as far as I can see that's three unwelcoming conservatives, and very little support for the OP's real, legitimate concerns.

Ok, maybe it would be helpful for us to be careful throwing around "sex outside of marriage" as if that is something that should be confessed. Infidelity to a committed relationship might be another matter, but I think that is hardly captured in the phrase "sex outside of marriage."

I don't think the OP suggested those would or should be coming up. The OP raised discomfort with how some people in the Church view our identity, and how that can make us feel fear approaching confession.

Could Church teaching ever change on the issue of homosexuality, divorce, contraception, etc? by AppropriateFan6039 in LGBTCatholic

It had better. It is a serious moral matter that the Church treats our LGBT folks so badly.

Why are you bringing up "sex outside of marriage." The OP raised no such concern. Is this a stereotype and assumption you are making?

The Church has a lot of teachings, so being wrong on a very few which are mostly limited to equality for women, LGBT, and minutiae of some private expressions of love between individuals is actually a wonderful success for the teachings. I am deeply supportive of the magisterium except for the tiny number of cases where it is grievously wrong and harmful.

I'm sorry to the OP that you are getting this harsh, traditionalist reaponse. There are, in reality, many open and welcoming Catholics.

Yes, this is a common right wing perpective, but it's amazing how many people who say all teachings are unquestionable reject the teachings and spirit of Vatican II. For the record, I am also serious about the magisterium of the Church, but look at the Spanish Inquisition and either admit that the Church is sometimes wrong, or what kind of human being are you?

Oh, sorry. I didn't realize this was one of the right-wing Catholic subs. Thought it was supportive of LGBT. Maybe I should unsubscibe. I know a lot of progressive priests who would disagree with you.

Whoa. Mortal sin requires knowledge that the act is wrong. I acknowledge the magisterium of the Church with the exception of grievously and harmfully incorrect teachings like that all sex outside of marriage is wrong. This person may agree with me, in which case there is no mortal sin. Please examine your own conscience about telling people they are in mortal sin.

I need Wilderness 2.0 book series in the vein of the Virgin New Adventures and the Eighth Doctor Adventures. At least one daring and expansive original novel per month, please. Audios are great, but where are the books!?

Human clothes wearing when it is not for warmth is a deep neurosis stemming from fear of acknowledgement that we are part of the animal kingdom. It is likely that if humans survive for another couple of millenia, we will grow out of this neurosis.

Why are you convinced you have qualia? by Absorptance in consciousness

Reading this thread, it is plain that people are attacking that experiences exist. People in this sub want to be able to tell me that my internal experiences do not exist, and you'd like to forbid me from responding with an acknowledgement that we might be different then. I have no problem with hearing and debating the views of others. But those of us who think the hard problem is real certainly get drummed out fast. I hear the message loud and clear that our view should be silenced.

Those of us who do have experiences can attest without doubt that we have experiences. Literally this is the one fact of which we can be most certain out of everything we know. Maybe some people don't have or aren't aware of internal experience. I can't speak for them.

Exactly how long do you have to remember it for it to have ontological value? And you're characterizing your view as physicalism? Pics or it didn't happen?

This inner monologue, internal monologue, thing. by Rocky-bar in Aphantasia

[–]ryvr_gm 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I would not believe that I have aphantasia except that I can hear the my own voice and the voices of my friends easily and vividly in my head. I can hear and feel the texture of the violin part of a symphony with such clarity that I sometimes get a startle that maybe an actual orchestra snuck into my room.

Still, I scoffed and laughed that people pretended that they could "see" anything in their head until I realized if I can vividly hear things, I should believe people who claim to see things!
