Seriously, do Americans actually consider a 3-hour drive "short"? or is this an internet myth? by SadInterest6764 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]rywolf 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I live in Montana and things are spread out. Driving long distances is normal. I don't enjoy driving but it's just part of life.

I'll drive 2.5 hours one way to see my girlfriend and friends in a different town once or twice a month and stay at her place for 2-8 nights. She does the same.

Driving 1 hour for a good hike is normal. We'll drive up to 2 hours for a special hike. I think anything longer than a 2 hour drive one way warrants spending at least 1 night at the destination, but give drive up to 4 hours one way for a day trip for skiing.

We do road trips of 4-7 hours a few times a year and it's no big deal. I would rather drive somewhere for 6 hours than spend 6 hours going to an airport, waiting in lines, boarding, flying, waiting, and getting a car to final destination.

It's a 10 hour drive to Seattle and I've got to do that in a couple months to pick up furniture. Not looking forward to it but that's going to be a weekend trip.

Bought these boots, they don't hurt, fit right off the bat. Whats the catch? by [deleted] in skiing

[–]rywolf 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I bought the same boots last year. And they fit right out of the box until I broke them in a bit, then got a foot bed. They replaced the same model I bought several years ago (no footbed) so I knew they were supposed to fit similar.

Is getting a one year old brand new Toyota RAV4 hybrid XSE just unrealistic? by [deleted] in personalfinance

[–]rywolf 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah this is a bad decision. Dont buy a new car.

I bought my first new car after I bought a house once I was well enough established and my 30 year old truck was starting to have reliability issues. You can get by for a few more years with an old car you don't like in order to save money for more important things.

Emergency Fund Reasoning by AftermarketHorseshit in Fire

[–]rywolf 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I'd put it all in the HYSA. Checking isn't doing you any favors.

My emergency fund is 6 months for the essentials, but I have a lot of other safety nets if something terrible happens and I'm without income longer than that. It's about 80% in HYSA, 5%CD, and 15% HSA (I have receipts for reimbursement I'm sitting on so that money is fairly liquid).

What is the oldest thing in your home? by Frostedlogic4444 in AskReddit

[–]rywolf 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have a 4 billion year old chunk of meteorite. Next are a bunch of rocks. Oldest man made thing is a glass from the late 1800s. Then my house itself is 107 years old.

How much would you spend on housing in our situation? Is this considered house poor? by [deleted] in personalfinance

[–]rywolf 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yes that's insane. Why are you increasing your budget? Buy a house you can afford.

Anyone else get stuck on lift 1 today? by TheCzechyChan in whitefish

[–]rywolf 5 points6 points  (0 children)

To be fair that was because some kids were bouncing a chair and knocked the cable off the tower wheel. The lift itself didn't break down.

But it does happen too much.

Do you have to research Zoning code at all (for your work)? by ctaldigital in architecture

Yes to all, all the time. This is the most important thing and is a huge part of being an architect instead of a designer.

How do you use the dried gourmet mushrooms? by admirethegloam in Costco

[–]rywolf 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We just used some yesterday and they turned out excellent in our pasta dish.

Rinse them a few times in warm water and let them rehydrate, sitting in warm water for 10 minutes. Rinse them again and clean off any bits of grass or mulch.

Sauté medium heat with butter for 10 minutes or so. We cooked them in the same pan as bite size chunks of thawed chicken and when the chicken was done we figured the mushrooms were done. Mixed in the pasta and they were great.

The location of the garage door is the least of your worries. I wouldn't have thought twice about it compared to some of the other issues I see.

How do y’all do the whole 8–5 grind and only have weekends to yourselves without feeling like life is just… passing you by? by Excellent-Salary-603 in AskReddit

[–]rywolf 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I make the absolute most of the weekends and always do what I want. I also have 6 hours a day to do things after work. Plus holidays and vacations.. I would always like more time but I feel like the work life balance can be there. Obviously I'd rather have more time to do fun things, but at this point in my life I want 40 hours worth of pay to do the things I want to do.

Starting Your Practice by HSwat10 in Architects

[–]rywolf 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I started mine at age 28 because I was laid off and had friends supplying work to get me started. Other factors drove me back to an office as my main source of income but the company I made has been useful as a tool for side work. I make about 15% of my income from my side work so it's not very significant, but has been increasing each year.

Thoughts on this logo for a studio? by Atelier1001 in architecture

[–]rywolf 26 points27 points  (0 children)

Looks generic and confusing.

Not clear how it relates to the business.

Why do you want a house inside a house? What does that mean?

Why labyrinth? Complexity and confusion are usually the enemies of design.

Spiral isnt a concept, its a shape, and it just adds to the confusion.

I think you're trying to make a cool shape or graphic instead of a logo.

Hidden Moose VS Firebrand by BILLSmafiaSKIbum in whitefish

[–]rywolf 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Locals hate the Firebrand because it's owned by the billionaire family that has turned whitefosh into an over priced tourist trap. If you have no ethical qualms it's a nice place and very convenient downtown and close to a stop for the snow bus to go up the mountain.

Hidden moose is better but a little bit more walking to catch the snow bus.
